Gogol Gastronomy: Gunter Grass and The Flounder: a voyage into mythical culinary history
http://gogolgastronomy.blogspot.com/2008/04/gunter-grass-and-flounder-voyage-into.html
Saturday, 8 March 2008. Gunter Grass and The Flounder: a voyage into mythical culinary history. 8220;I write about superabundance. About fasting and my gluttons invented it. About crusts from the tables of the rich and their food value. About fat and excrement and salt and penury. In the midst of a mount of millet I will relate instructively How the spirit became bitter as gall An the belly went insane”. Gunter Grass, The Flounder. Penguin, 1978, p.8). These are only two tiny extracts of one of the best ...

Gogol Gastronomy: Tropic of Cancer-inspired Russian Mushroom Broth
http://gogolgastronomy.blogspot.com/2008/09/henry-millers-russki-mushroom-broth.html
Thursday, 4 September 2008. Tropic of Cancer-inspired Russian Mushroom Broth. In Tropic of Cancer we are told that Henry was treated to a bowl of mushroom soup by the Russian émigrés. But I would argue that it was most likely a mushroom broth, probably made with dried ceps. Russians do not really do pureed soups or veloutés. It’s all about the clear broth with lovely chunky bits in it. I guess it's because Slavic (especially Russian cuisine) has Eastern influences. Orzo (rice shaped pasta) - 30 gr. Meanw...

Tuesday, 12 February 2008. Brazilian "Lovers' Salad" (Valentine's Day Suggestion). This is a suggestion for the coming Valentine's Day. It is incredibly simple, so good ingredients play a big role. It is one of the best and most refreshing salads I've ever tried. It's freshness is best appreciated when accompanied by spicy. Brazi...

Thursday, 8 February 2007. Babushka Lusia's Gherkin Brine Recipe. What you will need. Organic cherry tomatoes or gherkins. No, supermarket oversized cucumbers just wouldn't do.even if you cut them up. Try getting gherkins at a farmers market when they are in season. Another thing you will need is a big glass preserving jar (make sure the glass is thick) and a large pot. And of course put any spices you like. Cardamom gives it an extra kick. Water - 1 litre. Coarse sea salt - 4 full tbs. Sugar - 2 full tbs.

Wednesday, December 20, 2006. Pubs, spit and boredom. Pub quizzes. Who needs them? They make me feel so stupid, I never know anything! Every Wednesday at home (Not London), my friends go to the pub quiz. I think it is entirely the dullest thing that I could think of to do. Sometimes though, I go just to see them. Pubs scare me because they remind me the horrible prospect of going to work, coming home, going to the pub then bed. Isn’t this how people talk about becoming trapped by routine? I was so excite...
