Classes & Books. Native Plant Sale – Fall 2015. Classes & Books. When rain washes over our roofs, driveways and sidewalks, it picks up a variety of pollutants, such as pesticides, motor oil, metals, other chemicals. This polluted stormwater eventually drains into our rivers and streams, endangering water quality and making these waterways unhealthy for people, fish, and wildlife. Chickadee Gardens: August 2015

http://chickadeegardens.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 27, 2015. Purple Garden, White Garden. After coming down off of last week's post about Botanist Peter Goldblatt's garden. This all seems rather unexciting. Still, I press on, documenting my own garden throughout the year. I've already covered several of my color-themed borders here at Chickadee Gardens such as the yellow, blue, orange, and chocolate gardens. This week let's take a look at the cool and shady white border and also the hot, dry purple and silver border. Snowline' on the lef...

Thursday, January 28, 2016. Making A New Garden: History and Soil. There is a fabulous website - the Web Soil Survey. Hooray for all this knowledge. That only goes so far for me, though. I need to be hands-on, to dig in it and see for myself. Happily, this past week I've had a chance to do so as I've started planting a few larger shrubs and trees and have seen what this land is made up of. It all began with the planting of my four Olea europaea '. Guess what happened to all those moving boxes? Next was t...

Chickadee Gardens: September 2016

http://www.chickadeegardens.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 29, 2016. That was fast. September over. Now, October greets us. As summer wound down I was able to take advantage of cooler days and move a few things around. Yes, already- moving plants! We were also able to plug away on a few projects. Here's a wrap-up of September:. Karly Rose' in the evening sun. I see why it's got the name rose in it. Two of these grasses were gifted to me at our garden blogger's spring plant swap. I did not know what to expect but am very pleased. We saw the ne...

Thursday, November 19, 2015. Making a New Garden: Finding Land. For over a year we have been actively searching for a few acres to either build a tiny house or remodel a small, existing farmhouse. After a long search, we were mentally exhausted and ready to take a break from looking. Then in September we found this:. The adventures ahead of us are plenty. This is our forever home where we plan to live out our lives. I want to take special care to garden sustain-ably and to consider every move bef...We ar...

Chickadee Gardens: August 2016

http://www.chickadeegardens.com/2016_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 25, 2016. What could be more mundane than a rock pile? So I say to myself as I look at this first photo. Stay with me here.it's gone, the rock pile. Finally. After nine months of looking at it, mowing around it, trying to photograph the garden and magically keep it from blemishing photographs, it exists no longer! Part of me rejoiced in having rocks to play with. After all, my brother is a geologist and, well, I collected rocks as a kid so what's not to love? Oh, remember this one? I'm g...

Chickadee Gardens: Chickens!

http://www.chickadeegardens.com/2017/01/chickens.html

Thursday, January 05, 2017. It's time to meet the ladies! Sure you're ready. Let's go now! We were off and running, driving about 20 minutes south to buy a few hens one rainy Sunday. One minute we were doing chores around the house, the next we were off to buy chickens. Here they are. FM calls this the "album cover picture." Front and center is Frida, back row left to right: Effie, Betty and Blanche. Let's meet them individually, how about that? She's first at the door, ready to go. Gal on the go! Very b...

Chickadee Gardens: April 2016

http://www.chickadeegardens.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 28, 2016. April Showers and Some Flowers. The month of April has flown by and we've been busy. I did take a few moments to take in the flowers, so to speak, which I thought would be a nice change of pace. First up, however, let's get the latest projects out of the way and move on to some inspiring details. The rot is somewhat evident in this photo. Although I cannot find a "before" photo of this exact scene, the small tree in the center got a thin-out. There were a couple rather large...

Thursday, February 25, 2016. Northwest Flower and Garden Show: Display Gardens. This week at Chickadee Gardens I bring you images from the 2016 Northwest Flower and Garden Show. In Seattle. The show, now in its 28th year, celebrated with the theme of National Parks, which are in their 100th year. There were display gardens, demos, seminars, and, of course, vendors at the marketplace as well as the antiques market. Today we explore the display gardens:. Nevertheless, it was stunning and my favorite. With ...
