Basement Breweries: Brewday - The White Whale Oatmeal Stout

http://basementbreweries.blogspot.com/2012/03/brewday-white-whale-oatmeal-stout.html

An ongoing home brewing project and beer blog in Victoria, British Columbia. Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Brewday - The White Whale Oatmeal Stout. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it. I certainly hope I fare better than Ahab did. I'll let the masses be the judge at the this weekend's BrewVic meetup. March 30, 2012 at 6:14 PM. Great question ano...

Basement Breweries: Ale of Olympus Belgian Tripel

http://basementbreweries.blogspot.com/2012/02/ale-of-olympus-belgian-tripel.html

An ongoing home brewing project and beer blog in Victoria, British Columbia. Friday, February 24, 2012. Ale of Olympus Belgian Tripel. I may have finally gone too far. Several months ago when I suggested the idea to a few people of making a Belgian beer with saffron threads and chantrelle mushrooms, they were sceptical to say the least. But this idea wouldn't go away, and neither would the belief that it could be amazing, so after testing the waters with my first tripel The Unbeliever. The tripel itself ...

small beer: September 2011

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 20, 2011. When beer gets in the way of writing about beer. Too often a blogger slips in from an absence with a credible excuse about being busy with real life. I have not written in close to two weeks for much better reasons, and all of them to do with beer. 1 Great Canadian Beer Festival. I am one of the "founding members" of Victoria's new home brewers' association/guild "BrewVIC". The website is in advanced beta. Well, I don't…. 3 Building a homebrew setup. small beer: June 2011

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 27, 2011. I feel suitably recovered from becoming a dad for the second time to get back to important activities once again. A slow start perhaps, as I will just be posting a collection of recent beer photographs just now. But this doesn't mean I've been slacking — why, we brewed our own espresso dunkelweisse and wrote an article about it and got a double spread feature for Monday Magazine's beer issue. Not bad for a dude covered in babypoo. On with the show:. From front to back:. Beer On The...

small beer: April 2011

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Sumpin's Up with the Wacky Hops. Last time I had a Lagunitas it was the weird Brown Shugga. Lovely stuff, but I'm a cantankerous type and I'm going to whine about the label. There's a trend these days to add a jaunty twist to ingredient lists, and it is cheesy and boring. "Hops, Malt, Hops, Hops, Yeast, Hops, Water, and Hops" reads the label. Haha. How WACKY! To their cute ingredient icons. But for every Perpetual IPA. There's a dozen that are less-than-inspired: Hop Circle.

small beer: Moving over to the Dark Side

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/moving-over-to-dark-side.html

Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Moving over to the Dark Side. One of the reasons I haven't written much here recently is my new hobby of homebrewing. No, I am not so absorbed in improving brewhouse efficiency and mastering recipe-crafting that I have no time to write (although these are very absorbing subjects). Here are a few observations gleaned from my young homebrewing career that have changed my perspective on beer. 1 It is not easy to make good beer. 2 Someone makes beer. Does he look hygienic? My firs...

Searching for the line between hobby and obsession. Leinie, the Barking Dog. The end of an era. This blog is on the move! I’ve ported all the posts over to www.barkingdogbrewery.com. And am in the process of linking all posts here over to their new locations. The new site is built on a more flexible platform (WordPress.org as opposed to WordPress.com) allowing for more robust analytics and CSS experimentation opportunities. Should be fun. Searching for the line between hobby and obsession. Leinie, the Barking Dog. The pic to the right is my beer being poured and distributed. Whatever I did with the carbonation on this one was correct, as it has a nice sustaining head without being overly carb’d. I’ll have to look back at my notes. Here’s the recipe. From my original post covering the brew day. It’s essentially Jamil’s recipe from Brewing Classic Styles. This entry was posted on July 1, 2012 by Grant P. Wright. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

small beer: January 2012

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Review: Lighthouse Belgian Black. Lighthouse gave me a bottle of Belgian Black to review this week. This doesn't happen to me very often. I have long harboured a fantasy of utterly panning a freebie just to prove I have integrity. Maybe that's why I don't get too many. On this occasion, I'm happy to risk looking like a sell-out, because I really like this beer. Series. Deckhand was a lovely saison and Uncharted is practically the only "Belgian IPA" worth drinking. small beer: May 2011

http://smallbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 5, 2011. Pliny Proves a Point. What dreadful timing, and how annoying: a bottle of Pliny the Elder made itself available to me today. This is sincerely not good. The reason I'm probably the least excited beer drinker ever to anticipate his first taste of what some people consider to be the finest IPA. Indeed, beer) currently made, is because of my last blog post. In it, I whined. No sense beating myself up about it, let's drink this thing. Tuesday, May 3, 2011. I was round Dave. No, you'll ...
