Tuesday, April 04, 2006. VIDEO REVIEW: WALKING WITH MONSTERS. Four-metre long sea scorpions, ferocious ten-foot long mammals with dog-like skulls, mega-spiders the size of a human head These are not fantasy creatures, but just some of the animals that actually roamed the earth before the age of the dinosaurs. Through Walking with Monsters we can witness the early story of life and discover how humans owe our existence to monsters more strange than we could ever have imagined. Phone 27 21 959 3940. Monday, April 10, 2006. BIODIVERSITY TAUGHT THROUGH THE WEBLOG. I have had requests from both David and Karen that this course is done. More on-line. This is desirable but you guys will need to be more. Sensitive in giving me time to put material up which means I cannot be. Available simply when you are around. Currently it has been extremely. Wednesday, April 19, 2006. CLARIFICATION NEEDED ON ASSIGNMENTS. I have had a look at the course material and it looks very interesting. I however have a query about the assignments at the end of each section. Do we need to write a 1-2 page essay on the combined topics or for each topic separately? That would amount to 40 essays in a span of 2 weeks! That surely cannot be.) Even if it is combined, that would amount to 13 essays, which is roughly one a day over the next two weeks. Could you please clarify?

Thursday, April 27, 2006. How do insects attract a mate? Different insects use different strategies and what seems attractive to one group goes unnoticed to another. But they all serve the same purpose: to find a mate and complete their life cycle. Here are a few examples of the diversity in attraction methods that have evolved from colour, to smell to sound. 1 Picker M, Griffiths C, Weaving A. 2002. Field Guide to Insects of South Africa. Geoinformatics: Mar 10, 2007

http://g-i-blog.blogspot.com/2007_03_10_archive.html

Saturday, March 10, 2007. During the past two-weeks I have been teaching my post-graduates about geographical position, latitude and longitude, degrees, minutes, seconds, and decimal degrees. It might seem very easy to seasoned geo-informatics practioners, but students were finding it a little difficult. The problem surfaced when I expected the students to make different sized boundary boxes around a central point to insert some of our OGC web maps. Longitude 18 37 36.1. Latitude -33 55 53.4.
