Is there potential for “ethical analytics”? | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/is-there-potential-for-ethical-analytics
Is there potential for ethical analytics? We have Piwik analytics. On the Ind.ie site. And I use Gauges and GoSquared on my own site (I was indecisive at the time) But I use Ghostery. So I actually block analytics like this for my own use. As someone who is a big web fan, and used to work in client services, I understand the value of particular types of analytics for simple sites like ours:. Amount of hits (required to understand popular/unpopular content and make financial decisions for hosting etc).

Freelance map illustration | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/project/freelance-map-illustration
For a talk about my journey through freelancing, I wanted to do something slightly different from my usual slides. When I was 11 or 12, I was obsessed with drawing maps; the kind of old treasure island maps that combined routes for travel along with detailed drawings of particular island features. With just a couple of days before the talk, I undertook a huge illustration project. The map with ink traced over the the pencil. I then rubbed out the pencil. Digitised map with a brown aged-style wash. The br...

Siftware website and branding | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/project/siftware
Siftware website and branding. March to June, 2013. The Siftware project was great because I got to work on so many elements surrounding the Siftware brand. I updated the logo, designed the website and created business cards and postcards. The illustrations (as part of the website design) were the most fun. For this project, I worked with Stu Robson. A bit about me. I'm a designer from the UK, living in Sweden, and working as one half of Ind.ie.

The new MacBook Pro’s. It appears the dust has started to settle after Apple’s latest event where they released new MacBook Pro’s. After posting some initial reactions from their announcement to Twitter I’ve sat back and had a little think of the announcement from a new techie point of view. Back to the new MacBook Pro’s…. Would I buy one today if I was due and upgrade or looking for a new computer? Would I buy one today to just upgrade due them being new? After reading this article. Two months with it&#...

Apps Playground | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/project/apps-playground
April to October, 2013. Apps Playground was a really fun project. Stuart and Alice had loads of great content on their site reviewing apps for kids, but were using a fairly plain WordPress theme. They wanted something fun and appealing to parents which showed off the variety of their reviews and articles, and made it easy for parents to find apps suited to the age group and interests of their child. Early on, I came up with a concept for the logo and a colour scheme that would be bright and cheerful.

Perch theme for Swift Migrations | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/project/perch-theme-for-swift-migrations
Perch theme for Swift Migrations. May to June, 2013. When Rachel asked me to design a Perch theme, I was very excited. The default theme I created for Perch. Was very simple, and this was a chance to get in on the bird-related puns. The goal of the theme was to be a corporate site that used Perch without add-ons, but with more complexity than the default theme. First Swift Migrations style tile. Screenshot of the widest viewport design, showing how extra whitespace is added when the viewport is wider.

Turbine website | Laura Kalbag
http://laurakalbag.com/project/turbine-website
June to December, 2013. Turbine was one of my favourite projects to date. Having the time to focus on creating an original logo, and then building a site up around that brand, was a great opportunity. It was fun to work with a team with a marketing background, as every bit of content was carefully planned and had to earn its right to exist. After a lot of research, I started on the logo design. Wireframes for the Turbine homepage including maximum and minimum viewport widths and expanding navigation.

January to April, 2014. Http:/ www.breadstand.us. Breadstand’s Home Barista was one of my most fun projects to date. David gave me a lot of freedom, and we came up with a lot of ideas collaboratively as we discussed how he wanted the business to work. Early style tile with logo ideas. You can see how the content and structure evolved between this early wireframe and early mockup. The header of the final site, with the illustration showing how the coffee machines work.
