Anitra and Keith, Community Volunteers. Written by Jasmine Turner. Anitra and Keith Walker strive to embody what it means to have a servant's heart. Both natives of the Burlington area, the husband and wife understand the need for assistance and empathy for the issue of hunger and homelessness in Alamance County. While it can be easier to simply donate a canned good to a food drive or food bank, Anitra and Keith's approach is much more hands on. Standing behind a hot bar, Walker and her volunteers serve ...

Vickie, Allied Churches Resident. Written by Kyle Maher. A middle-aged woman sits at one of the five long, gray tables and stares at the small television hanging on the wall in the corner, which is showing a Lifetime movie. She only breaks her concentration to scan the front pages of the newspapers she has sitting on the table in front of her. Vickie's story, as it turns out, is like so many others in her position. She doesn't have to worry about where her next meal will come from, like so many others ha...

Jensen, Founder of H.O.P.E. Written by Lauren Snow. A sophomore leadership fellow at Elon University, Jensen Roll has always felt a deep connection to people and loves helping those when he feels he can. Thus, Helping Other People Eat (HOPE) became the brainchild of Jensen. Ed - On September 18, 2014, we received a note ...

Phil, Sustainable Alamance. Written by Karina Pope. Draughts and floods have not stopped Phil Bowers of Sustainable Alamance from planting his Urban Garden with ex-convicts in Downtown Burlington each and every year. This year, for the fifth year of planting, Bowers expects his newest project to be even more successful. The goal of the Urban Farm, Bowers explains as he points down the road to a large empty patch of land, is to teach ex-convicts to grow their own food to help save money and eventually, to...

Tracy, Open Door Clinic. Written by Katy Canada. Tracy Salisbury is a giver. She established herself as such at a young age when she donated all her toys and clothes to a friend who had none. When her mother happened upon Salisbury's empty closet, she scolded her, not because she disapproved, but because she didn't have any money to replace the missing items. But patients at the Open Door Clinic face several obstacles apart from obtaining their medications. Lack of transportation to and from the clin...

Written by Lindsay Lanquist. Patrick Harman has been interested in community service work for as long as he can remember. He has been directly involved in four nonprofit organizations, and his work has ranged from being a board member for Christmas Cheer to helping Alamance Citizens for Education get established. I think I've always want to make the world a better place," he said. "That set me on the road to where I am now.". He said. "I'd love to do that experiment. You'd get a lot more people o...From ...

Raven, Burlington's Unknown Soldier. Written by Tyler Ash. Raven Merchand, 54, of Burlington sits eating his lunch at the local church's soup kitchen. He seems content swallowing his pasta. He wears military clothing and a military hat. He has experienced things others could never imagine. Nor want to imagine. He is the unknown soldier. He walks to the Caring Kitchen of Burlington, a soup kitchen, at 12:30 pm most Sundays. He walks everywhere. With prosthetic limbs. He plans on saving up for a mission tr...

After Effecting | Better Alamance
https://betteralamance.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/after-effecting-2
MA Interactive Media Capstone Project. I finally feel like I’ve made progress. This semester had been marked by the feeling of never accomplishing as much in a day as hoped, but today I had a successful day of “After Effecting”. A version of the Better Alamance tutorial video is complete. It always amazes me how much work really goes into a short video, but I happy to say I feel much more proficient in After Effects than I did when I made a motion typography project.
