Bicycle Perth

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Saturday, 28 February 2015. This is how we do it in Perth when we have a blank canvas. This street in Ellenbrook is brand new, a greenfield development. It has been constructed before any buildings in a relatively flat sandy area. Any established trees or bushes were cleared away to ensure there were no obstacles to hinder the design yet we have something disappointingly mediocre. The Parkway, Ellenbrook. There was an obvious opportunity to prov...

Bicycle Perth: September 2014

http://www.bicycleperth.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Sunday, 28 September 2014. Perth's protected bicycle track built in 1986. Back in 1986 someone at the City of South Perth council must have had some inspiration. This 400 metre long section of Banksia Terrace had the carriageway narrowed and a bicycle track was installed along the north side. It was done by simply removing the option of on-street car parking on one side and building a buffer zone with concrete kerbs and garden beds. I was living...

Bicycle Perth: June 2014

http://www.bicycleperth.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Friday, 13 June 2014. Australia, start counting to three. The bicycle can be used for sport, or transport. During the past 40 years Australia’s concept of the bicycle has shifted so much the majority of people now just consider it a piece of sporting equipment. We like to think of ourselves as a sporting nation, and we know you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to participate in sport. Therefore, millions of us own bikes. That’s interest...

Bicycle Perth: October 2013

http://www.bicycleperth.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Monday, 7 October 2013. How to use an Australian roundabout. Bicycle riders are quite rare in Kalgoorlie. Recently, while I was walking around the town I spotted one and felt compelled to take a photograph. A bit weird I know, I guess the impulse is comparable to an ornithologist seeing a rare bird. Growing frustrated, he took off on foot to an easier place to cross. After crossing he resorted to illegally riding along the footpath. There is a s...

Bicycle Perth: March 2014

http://www.bicycleperth.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Monday, 31 March 2014. Parking, pedestrians and government borders. This is how it appears for pedestrians at eye level. Not so good. The Railway Parade side of the building has eighty metres of blank wall punctuated with metal vents for the car park behind. It is disappointing that the City of Subiaco has allowed such a bleak addition to the street scape. Imagine if every building was like this: it would be like walking in a concrete trench.

Bicycle Perth: September 2013

http://www.bicycleperth.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

About making a better city for walking and riding bicycles. Monday, 9 September 2013. The stupid roundabouts in Kalgoorlie. You may know I dislike roundabouts. I have written about them previously. The City of Kalgoorlie has a unique dangerous version for anyone on a bicycle. At first glance there seems to be a convenient bicycle lane on the approach to the intersections. Labels: City of Kalgoorlie. Saturday, 7 September 2013. Why does Canberra have more crosswalks than Perth? A big building with a flag.

A view from the cycle path: 100% segregation of bikes and cars

http://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/2012/04/100-segregation-of-bikes-and-cars.html

Monday, 2 April 2012. 100% segregation of bikes and cars. Clear signage gives loading times. Again and again I read comments of the form "even in Holland not all parts of rides are segregated" or talk of "similar road exposure" in the UK vs. the Netherlands. I've been accused of making out that the cycle-path network. In the Netherlands is more extensive than it actually is. Not on an equal basis. It's a through route for bikes but access. City centre streets are busy, but with. Bikes instead of cars.

A view from the cycle path: December 2014

http://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, 27 December 2014. The devastating effect of Shared Space on the blind. Shared Space represents a return of "might is right" to roads which could instead have been transformed to favour cycling. I've long been opposed. Because of its effect on all vulnerable road users. In 2008. I quoted the UK Guide Dog's association who said that " All of the participants reported greater difficulty. In London and the Shared Spaces in Southend-on-Sea. Shared Space in Assen. Not just a problem in Britain. Advoc...

A view from the cycle path: April 2015

http://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 6 April 2015. Edisonstraat in Hoogeveen. A road redesign which had fatal consequences. What lessons can be learnt? On the tenth of February, a 63 year old employee of the Fokker aircraft company in Hoogeveen was seriously wounded. At 7:30 in the morning while cycling to work as a result of a collision with a car driven by a 19 year. The next day, he passed away. What's went wrong with Edisonstraat? Cyclists have little choice but to travel on the right side of right. Reach the cycle-path which.

Bicycle Philosophy

Tuesday, 1 December 2009. If I can bicycle, I bicycle. It doesn't get much more simple than this zen quote from Sir David Attenborough. If I can bicycle, I bicycle". Not much to add to that brilliance. Or see all the Bicycle Philosophy designs here. Posted by Mikael Colville-Andersen. Life is Like a Ten Speed Bicycle. Charles M. Schulz reflects on life and bicycles. Life is like a ten speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use.". Or see all the Bicycle Philosophy designs here. When I see an adult ...
