Blacks from the Bahama Islands settled in the Florida Keys following the collapse of the Bahamian economy in the late 1800s. The old slave quarters at Fort Dallas, built by the slaves of William English in 1842. The building later housed soldiers during the Third Seminole War. Click for a larger image. E W F Stirrup (1873-1957), Coconut Groves's most successful businessman. Born in the Bahamas in 1873, Stirrup moved to Coconut Grove in 1899. He built many of the first homes for Blacks in Coconut Grove using his skills as a carpenter. Josephine Dillard Powell (1895-1991), one of the first Black settlers in Lemon City. William B. Sawyer Jr., the son of Miami pioneer doctor William B. Sawyer. Sawyer operated his father's Mary Elizabeth Hotel at the epicenter of Colored Town in it's heyday. An opthamologist from Oklahoma, Brown arrived in Miami after WWII and immediately became a leader of the movement in Miami. I realize that this is somewhat off-topic for this website, but it is a fairly comprehensive. Timeline on events that are important to African-American history. Twenty Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, aboard a Dutch ship. They were the first blacks to be forcibly settled as involuntary laborers in the North American British Colonies. Massachusetts was the first colony to legalize slavery by statute. The first documented attempt at a rebellion by slaves took place in Gloucester County, Virginia.
