Black Thumbs Anonymous

There are some basic prerequisites for successful gardening. I possess none of them. I don't even like being outdoors very much. My other plights include my fear of bees (apiphobia), wasps (spheksophobia) and, less specifically, all things buzzy. I am optimistic about being rehabilitated though... I hope to cultivate beautiful plants and, if I'm lucky, my very own green thumb.

Black Thumbs Anonymous: Two weeks since planting my veggies...

http://blackthumbsanonymous.blogspot.com/2009/06/two-weeks-since-planting-my-veggies.html

Saturday, June 27, 2009. Two weeks since planting my veggies. And I have some good news. And some bad news. Let's start with the good news. How about a little before and after? The pictures above are from the day my gardening assistant (my mom) and I planted. This is my zucchini (I see lots of gardeners call them zukes - who knew! There were two seedlings and I planted them in one of three large round tubs I purchased from the flea market. Did I mention I only paid FIVE DOLLARS for all three? And now, tw...

Black Thumbs Anonymous: New Life

http://blackthumbsanonymous.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-life.html

Thursday, June 11, 2009. About a week and a half ago I planted some impatiens. From seed in a large clay pot on my front porch. This pot was given to me by the students in the second grade class I student taught six years ago. Of course I killed the original plant they potted - but that was before I turned over my new leaf, pun intended. Forgive its faded and chipped paint - sentimentally, it's beautiful. All together I counted 11 sprouts. Let's see if I can manage not to kill them. THAT IS SO EXCITING!

Black Thumbs Anonymous: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

http://blackthumbsanonymous.blogspot.com/2009/06/very-hungry-caterpillar.html

Wednesday, June 24, 2009. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. If you have had young children in the past 40 years, you may be familiar with Eric Carle. Before I was a SAHM, I taught both the second and third grade. I am overly fond of good children's literature and I would consider Carle among the best of the best. So, should I be flattered that Mr. Carle's very own leading larva from his best known book made an appearance in my garden this week? June 25, 2009 at 1:10 PM. And everyone will read this next part a...

Black Thumbs Anonymous: Fertilizer Friday

http://blackthumbsanonymous.blogspot.com/2009/07/fertilizer-friday.html

Friday, July 3, 2009. Be sure you drop by Tootsie's blog. To admire everyone's well-fed gardens today! Okay, last week was my first, and I am a believer! My veggies LOVED their food so much! By mid-week I could already tell a difference. Wow, wow, WOW! I found that Friday couldn't get here soon enough this week so I could treat my babies to another round of Miracle Gro. My yellow squash has just about doubled in size over the past week or so! Even the one that had been eaten up is doing so well! That's a...

Black Thumbs Anonymous: Impatient for impatiens...

http://blackthumbsanonymous.blogspot.com/2009/07/impatient-for-impatiens.html

Wednesday, July 1, 2009. About three weeks ago I planted impatiens from seed ( see this post. Well, less than two weeks after my planting, suddenly one morning as I was watering I discovered that something had come along and eaten 80% of my seedlings. This literally happened overnight. I was perturbed and baffled because I couldn't see any obvious offenders. I sprayed and hoped for the sparing of the remaining seedlings. Welcome, little Red Wax and Olympia White Begonias! July 1, 2009 at 2:09 PM. I wonde...

Tuesday, February 23, 2010. My next appointment will be Tuesday. Anything could happen between now and then, so stand by! Wednesday, February 17, 2010. 2-year molars and 2 week wait. I'm just going to jump in here as if I've not been MIA for four months. :). Now, if I keep up some posting, I owe lots of pictures. Maybe I can make that happen. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Everyday Blessings: March 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 23, 2009. Just wanted to share some pics I took just before his afternoon nap today. He was busy being impish and mischievous - two of his specialties. A couple of these shots show him getting ever closer to being officially mobile, so be on the look-out for another milestone report soon. In the meantime, I'll be busy baby-proofing the house! Eh, what's up, Doc? I just think he looks more like a toddler than a baby in this one. *tear*. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Friday, March 20, 2009. My blog...

Thursday, February 26, 2009. A busy day makes a sleepy boy. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Giving it a go! Okay - here I am in my maiden voyage as a blogger. I have been trying to format and personalize my blog with limited success so far. I will eventually work out the little details, but I rationalized that I had to start somewhere. In lieu of an official post, here is at least a recent picture of our little tank. Let's ponder what he's saying. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). We are truly blessed!

Everyday Blessings: June 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 29, 2009. This past Saturday we hosted our closest family members at our home to celebrate Henry's first birthday. It was a small event (though in a home the size of ours, it felt much bigger) but it was a cherished time to share with those who love our little man so much. Making Your Home Sing" Monday. Circle, but I think this fits more appropriately here at Everyday Blessings. While I think every day is an opportunity to bless my family, I hope to make it a habit to share what I'm doin...

Everyday Blessings: October 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 8, 2009. Well, after watching Henry's peers whisper, shout, shake, and squeal the word "no" at their parents, sometimes in jest and often in defiance, my day has come. Henry has finally discovered the word "no.". As of today, I don't think he really. He likes to say the "no," often with fervor. I know it is only a short time before I'm arguing with my toddler. Lord, give me patience and good humor. Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Wordless Wednesday: Fun With a Plastic Box. Moms In The Right.

Everyday Blessings: August 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 14, 2009. This morning, I was sitting in the desk chair while Henry was playing. He came up to me and stood between my legs, which I decided became a good opportunity to talk about baby. He's not yet 14 months, so I know his understanding is limited if anything, but maybe getting used to hearing the word will make the transition less shocking. Here is what transpired:. Mama: Henry, did you know there is a baby in here? Henry: [ touches belly where Mama points. Again, pointing to belly.

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2010/02/2-year-molars-and-2-week-wait.html

Wednesday, February 17, 2010. 2-year molars and 2 week wait. I'm just going to jump in here as if I've not been MIA for four months. :). I really hadn't been looking forward to another induction, but I'm also not too interested in birthing a sack of potatoes. So we wait for two more weeks and see where we stand. My instinct is telling me Stella isn't waiting for 40wks anyway. I think she's planning an early arrival, which is really alright by me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We are truly blessed!

Everyday Blessings: April 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 21, 2009. I just can't believe it! My baby is ten months old! It's so hard to believe (or accept! That my little man is so nearly approaching his first birthday. It's hard not to be in love with him as he is now - he's handsome, charming, and full of joy at life's simplest pleasures - like, say, an empty soda bottle! Also, I went back and added video of him crawling in this. Post - be sure to check it out! Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Technical difficulties - please check back soon for video!

Friday, May 29, 2009. A Ride in Paw-Paw's Tractor. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Big Boy Car Seat! Henry's got a new ride. Almost two weeks ago, we purchased a new big boy car seat. After researching different models, and learning more about car-seat safety in the process, we decided on an Evenflo Triumph Advanced. So far we love the seat! Okay, here's my schpeel: the current law in Texas states that children must ride rear-facing until they are 20lbs. Is a link for a video that convinced me we weren't going t...

Everyday Blessings: September 2009

http://everydayblessings-house.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Let's have a Wordy Wednesday instead! At 15 months, Henry's vocabulary has almost doubled already in the past two months. And as I said in my last post. About the words Henry is saying, there are TONS of words in his receptive vocabulary (those words that he understands when he hears them but isn't verbalizing.) I'm such a proud mama! Words Henry says regularly or when prompted:. Mop" (mama help - when he needs help). Mmmmm" (whale sound" - pitching intonation). Well, when ...

Black Thumb of Death Gardening

I kill plants. In the hopes of not being responsible for "plantcide", I am attempting a food garden. This blog will journal my adventures.and misadventures. Thursday, August 8, 2013. Early August Garden Update. I am taking better notes on what does well where in a bed. It is weird how they react on one side of a bed compared to the other, in the same area. The artichoke plants are still tiny. Same for the watermelons. They are healthy, just not growing. Oh well. The radishes are already pulled. Most ...

Black Thumb Rising

In the Beginning: Gardening as Rebellion. In researching the origins of gardens, I stumbled across the writings of Juris Zarins, an archeologist specializing in the Middle East and best known for heading up the team who discovered the ancient city of Ubar. Zarins also happens to have some interesting theories on the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were heirs to a natural bounty. They had everything they needed. But they sinned and were expelled. How did they sin? By challenging God’s very omnipotence&...

Friday, July 10, 2009. Yay - another week comes to an end, and another Fertilizer Friday finds me feeding my plants. Be sure you check out our hostess, Tootsie. For a look at her beautiful garden and the gardens of all her friends! My veggies are just growing like crazy. My yellow squash has gotten even bigger this week, I think eclipsing my zukes.
