Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Dull, dreary, freezing rain, rain, and more rain. No sun until maybe Sunday, so staying inside has been the norm for this week . Trying to get some Christmas decorating done, but not really in the mood so watching the birds is more interesting. Here are some through the window shot's of the Northern Flicker that has been coming for the suet . He really is liking these chucks of beef suet I put out . And he is off! Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Can I get my act together"? Thanks...

Monday, May 4, 2015. May" "I thought it would never get here"! Hard to believe 4 weeks has past since I last posted, and a lot has changed around here in the weather department in that time. It is 82 degrees outside at the moment :). That blanket of snow that covered the fields next to my home has turned into a patchwork quilt of dried brown, and lush green grasses. The lawns are greening up fast, and will have to be mowed first thing I know. How did I forget about Poplar Trees? I have managed to get bird...

Monday, March 30, 2015. One More Bird In The Basket. I have been hoping to have some sign of Spring to post by now, but I guess it will be awhile as I look out across the field next to my house with 95% still covered with snow. It has been snowing all day "yes I said snowing"! It is melting as it hits the ground, but still discouraging. The adorable little Tufted Titmouse was one I wanted to include in birds in the basket, so I decided to use all the photo's I had of it in the basket. Giving me a photo o...

Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Warblers: "Hope it is not the end". I am at the end of the warblers I have seen so far this Spring , but I am not giving up one never knows what may turn up! Another that doesn't carry the Warbler in it's name is the American Redstart! It is the only Warbler besides Blackburnian Warbler that combines orange, black and white in it's adult plumage! This one is a "lifer"too, and I wish I had gotten better photo's, but it is what it is and at least I have some! Exciting stuff" : }.

Sunday, July 27, 2014. What's Blooming in July's Garden. Darn" I fell of the blogging wagon again! I am a trying to balance on the edge, so many things to accomplish around here, and of course distractions! For instance I just saw two Wild Turkeys hens near the tree line of the field in my view from my computer! You know I had to check it out to see if there was chicks in tow, but even with binoculars I couldn't tell so I have to keep one eye on that! These are some I have taken through the month of July!

Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Great Blue Heron (aka the Mouser). Bird Hunting season is over the cold weather is settling in, and I believe the backyard mouser has moved. You might, if you haven't already seen my past two posts want to check them out for a better understanding of the mouser). I haven't seen him for a week now! Here are the last of the photo's I had taken of him at the end of October! On this day I was really surprised when I pushed the limit on how close I could get before he flew! I wasn'...

Blue Jay Barrens: Tadpole Feeding Frenzy
https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015/05/tadpole-feeding-frenzy.html
Friday, May 1, 2015. This is a typical Wood Frog tadpole dispersal pattern. Each tadpole is engaged in a random search for food. They nibble their way across the pond bottom, check every surface of submerged plant material, and even turn belly up to skim the film of pollen grains from the water’s surface. Occasionally, an especially appealing food source will cause a pile-up of tadpoles. These tadpoles are all competing for some tasty morsel hidden from view by the mass of tadpole bodies. My discussions ...

Blue Jay Barrens: Harvesting Draba Seeds
https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015/05/harvesting-draba-seeds.html
Wednesday, May 20, 2015. This could pass as a Martian landscape, but it is actually a portion of the seed I harvested today from my container grown Draba cuneifolia. I decided to try using my shop vac as a harvester. My shop vac is a bagless model, so I took a clean sweeper bag and modified it to fit the inlet pipe on the inside of the shop vac dirt chamber. Then I directed the sweeper hose towards the plants and the seeds quickly disappeared. I just hoped everything was ending up in the bag. Draba seeds...
