David's Blog: July 2010

http://blog.davidwolinsky.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 23, 2010. The Headaches of Blocking Sockets. In Brunet, ACIS Lab's P2P software, we make heavy use of sockets, no doubt. Because UDP is more capable of traversing NATs than TCP, much of our focus has been on optimizing the UDP stack in the code. The concerns and issues we have had in using UDP include:. Safety of sending and receiving on a UDP socket at the same time. Do UDP sockets block. Can there be concurrent senders / receivers on a UDP socket at the same time. On to the findings! So I ...

David's Blog: Ubuntu Xen -> Debian Xen

http://blog.davidwolinsky.com/2011/05/ubuntu-xen-debian-xen.html

Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Ubuntu Xen - Debian Xen. Non-booting kernels when compiling additionals functionality into the kernel. Inability to use grub2 and having to install grub1. Default kernel didn't have devtmpfs included and Ubuntu relies on it. I still think that apt is superior to yum. One thing to note is that even though Debian has Xen built-in, it is useless since this is for academics, where students will certainly be expected to modify the Xen and potentially the dom0 kernels.

Thursday, March 19, 2015. GCC and UD2 instructions. A few colleagues and I are working on OS development. While most of the development has taken place on MacOS, I prefer Linux and primarily use rolling release distribution called Arch. It was absolutely baffling to see this type of behavior from a properly compiled program that was built using -Wall. So I did some searching in the assembly output to find where the UD2 instruction was being generated and found one in the following code snippet:.

Monday, December 6, 2010. Installing Xen 4.0.1 and testing on Ubuntu 10.04. So here's a rough outline:. Install or having a working Ubuntu 10.04. If you are doing a fresh install, I recommend using ext3 on your hard disks otherwise you'll have to reconfigure the Xen-Linux kernel. Install the necessary utilities to download, compile, and install Xen: apt-get install bcc bin86 gawk bridge-utils iproute libcurl3 libcurl4-openssl-dev bzip2 module-init-tools transfig tgif texinfo texlive-latex-base texlive-la...

David's Blog: July 2012

http://blog.davidwolinsky.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 3, 2012. Back in my days at Florida. I worked on a project called SocialVPN. With the intent of using Facebook. As a medium for exchanging public keys amongst friends. Now I am revisiting this with another project called Dissent. In which we want to use public keys from a group of users who may not be friends. Ignoring the why for each of these applications, let me describe the way things were, where they have gone, what I would like to see, and what could be minimally done. A potential sol...

You got to be kidding me! Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Starting new domains on Xen 4.0.1 from command line. So, I have issues with my installation of Xen4.0.1. As the graphics driver keeps crashes during boot up, resulting in a hung machine. For now, I am using a work around suggested by my colleagues David Wolinsky. And Pierre St. Juste. Namely to disable the graphics display module (using ". Mv /etc/init/gdm.conf /etc/init/gdm.disabled. At this point, Domain-0 boots up just fine, and. This will avoid...

Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Out of this Wolrd. What a week last week was. The heavens were illuminated with beautiful glowing colours. April 16th and April 17th there were two massive solar storms that put on some pretty impressive Aurora shows. Heres how I did mine. Skies were the closest. I was there for about an hour and decided I should pack up because the Aurora started to diminish. When I got to my car I looked at the pond and thought it might be worth trying, I walked over to the muddy edge, stan...
