This page was last updated on 20 March 2002. In April 1975, Seow Yew was awarded the PSC Overseas/Mombusho scholarship and headed to Japan for his university studies in Mechanical Engineering. Seow Yew and many others had to labour to study Japanese. Apart from his academic pursuit, Seow Yew continued with his judo career. During his stay in Japan, he managed to attain the rank of black belt. Seow Yew and I continued to keep in touch. And then, it was time for him to complete his National Service.

This page was last updated on 20 March 2002. In those days, having a Pre-University qualification enabled most of us to be admitted to the Officer Cadet Training (OCT) course. In addition, a student will be admitted into a Scholars’ Platoon if he is nominated for a scholarship (such as Colombo Plan or SAF Scholarship). In December 1974, many of us from Raffles Institution (RI). Those whose names were called were the fortunate ones awarded scholarships.

At about 6.30 pm, Seow Yew’s sister called with the devastating news that he has passed away. He collided with a stationary lorry while riding back to camp. Since that evening, I could. Never bring myself to ride a motorbike again. Seow Yew died at the age of 26. He has just completed a scholarship. In Japan and was in the midst of completing National Service.
