I'm taking notes. In the park, in the after-rain, on the day after the clocks pulled night in for the winter, dark figures flit. A dog, a torch, a jogger. The grass is squeaky. Soft things squish underfoot. Two American women pass, rumbling through the stillness. Their perfume is of incense and tatami, and for a second it transports me far away. Long gone, that smell.
