Moving into teaching | breakingupwithacademia

Breakin' up (with academia) is hard to do. August 4, 2014. Now that the PhD viva is over and I have done my corrections, my thoughts turn to the year ahead in which I will be training to be a teacher. The day after passing my viva I found out that I had been accepted on the PGCE course I had applied for and that a placement had already been arranged for me at the college where I did my shadowing back in June. I now feel excited about starting the course and especially about starting my placement. I&#...

Breakin' up (with academia) is hard to do. June 24, 2014. Since my last post I have applied for a post-16 and further education PGCE (post-graduate certificate in education) course and been offered an interview for the course. I’ve also done some work shadowing at a local 6th form college where I observed classes, talked to the students and got a feel for college life. My interview, it turns out, is two days before my PhD viva! Is it too soon to think that things finally appear to be going my way?

Breakin' up (with academia) is hard to do. September 3, 2014. Between now and then, I have a week’s holiday by the sea in order to relax and enjoy myself before the hard work begins in earnest. August 4, 2014. The interview for the PGCE took place 2 days before my viva, adding to the pressure I was under that week! The interview and tests went well and I was told in the interview that the college where I did my shadowing had asked for me to do my placement there if I wanted to, which was really great news.

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. The art of lists and adulthood. April 24, 2016. So far, I have always kind of fallen into things. I work hard at things and try to be a good person and, in doing so, I trust that the universe will always work out as she’s meant to. I have never ever been a list-writing, planning sort of person. In my head, the two have to go together. You write lists as part of a plan to make sure everything works out. It’s a little frightening in a way.

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. Where my heart lives and beats. March 31, 2016. I’ve never been very good at geography or where I actually am at any given point in time. I’m the girl who points left when she means right and names directions in a more whimsical (as opposed to accurate) sense. Any new place is always an adventure, no matter. I’m learning a new course, a new home, a new routine. I’m learning how to sprout. These feel like important things. Kathy, that i...

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. Tattoos and mindfulness and all. September 7, 2016. I’ve not written for my blog in far too long. Far far too long. Last term was hard so I hunkered down. Focused on my students. Focused on work. Wrote articles. Wrote things for other people. Seemed to write all the emails in the world. There are always going to be excuses. But this term, I am eking out chunks of time for me. It feels good and it feels healthy for me. And I’ve been thi...

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. The birthday ennui monster. May 23, 2016. I’m not good with my birthday. Other people’s birthdays – absolutely. I am there for all your birthday cake making, present wrapping, champagne/whisky drinking needs. I can sing, dance, and cheer with the best of them. But my own birthday is none of those things. I suffer from birthday ennui. Of course it’s also not realistic, at all. Neuroses rarely is. Intellectually, I know this. The point o...

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. Why it’s brave to be vulnerable. September 16, 2016. A long time ago, a friend translated a Brazilian poem for me called ‘The Almost’. I have no idea if it’s a famous poem in Brazil or something that barely anyone has read. I can’t remember what the poem was actually called in Portuguese. I have no idea if my friend actually translated it all correctly. If you are vulnerable, you will always be brave. But they don’t get it. Being v...

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. January 14, 2016. January 14, 2016. Sometimes my resolution eyes have been bigger than my resolution tummy. I seemed to always veer into Etsy and fitspo territory with a lot of my resolutions of the past. You should have seen how I was going to change the world one green juice in a knitted drink holder at a time.). I resolved to write as bravely as I could and still press ‘publish’, even if I closed my eyes doing it. I resolved to ...

Ramble around all the possible plans – because language is beautiful. Why the perfect red lip matters. November 27, 2015. November 27, 2015. So until this past Sunday, I had never really worn red lipstick properly before. Flirted with it just a little, tried red tints, but nothing that was boldly, unashamedly, absolutely red. Red felt too much. My lips would all of a sudden be ‘HELLO! A matte, creamy, grown-up, unabashed, blue-based red. The thing is though I don’t really care about those arguments. ...

Breaking Upwards
Based on the filmmakers’ actual experience, and starring the filmmakers themselves, “Breaking Upwards” explores a young, real life New York couple who, four years into their relationship and battling codependency, decide to intricately strategize their own break up. The film loosely interprets a year in their lives exploring alternatives to monogamy and the madness that ensues. It begs the question: is it ever possible to grow apart together? Breaking Upwards Official Trailer. Monday, April 12, 2010.
