Cutting 10% of Grade 1 Races Part 1. The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association has deemed 112 races in 2013 worthy of Grade 1 status. When the 13 Grade 1 Breeders Cup races which vary by location, distance, and surface are removed, there are 99 Grade 1 races left. A chart of these 99 Grade 1 races...

A blog focusing on the business of the thoroughbred industry, its mistakes, and its future from my viewpoint in a Lexington subdivision. Thursday, November 29, 2012. Instead of declaring jihad on Lasix and avoiding the resulting wasted time, energy, and ink debating the decision and whether or not two year old horses actually bled during the Breeder’s Cup, imagine if instead the Jockey Club chose a different path. However, the Jockey Club should set a maximum number of live foals from one stallion. In fa...

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Winner's Circle. A funny thing happened on Golden Frontier’s way to the winner’s circle in the Kelly’s Landing Stakes at Churchill Downs. Namely, he didn’t win and there was no return trip to the winner’s circle. He did not even hit the board despite going off as the 1:1 favorite. The second guessing began a...

Hiding Death in Plain Sight - Going Behind the Screen and Pointing the Finger At Someone Else. Everyone agrees that there should be fewer breakdowns and fatalities from racing and training. Through the Eyes of a Deaf Equine Fanatic: Spring is wound season
http://deafequinefanatic.blogspot.com/2015/05/spring-is-wound-season.html
Friday, May 29, 2015. Spring is wound season. Poor Limerick presented with a wound on her right hock last night. When I saw it, my blood pressure went through the roof. Most wounds don't bother me, but wounds over a joint- no matter how small- make me neurotic. The swelling was very minimal and clearly from trauma to the tissue, which is expected. And although the wound had a bit of a scooped-out appearance, there was no puncture. Thankfully. After a restless night I visited Limerick early this morning t...

Through the Eyes of a Deaf Equine Fanatic: Death of Joey & general update on Lim
http://deafequinefanatic.blogspot.com/2015/07/death-of-joey-general-update-on-lim.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. Death of Joey and general update on Lim. A couple years ago I wrote a post about Lim's then-boyfriend, Joey. A few months after that post, Joey's owners opted to move him to pasture board. He had a hard time adjusting to the change and lost weight rapidly. Limerick was walked over to his body to say goodbye to an old friend. Lim and Joey, summer 2012. Limerick has been okay aside from some vague hind end lameness, not unlike what she had in 2013. I think the soreness was a compe...

Through the Eyes of a Deaf Equine Fanatic: Common ground at the barn
http://deafequinefanatic.blogspot.com/2015/05/common-ground-at-barn.html
Friday, May 22, 2015. Common ground at the barn. I was trying Limerick’s new mosquito mesh fly gear on her last night (a purchase of belly band extenders is warranted, and the boots will be returned in exchange for a larger size) when I saw the husband of a new boarder petting his wife’s horse in a dark stall. I flicked on the light switch for that horse’s stall. “Here’s the switch for the light,” I said. 8220;The light switch—it’s here if you want it,” I said. 8220;I’m sorry? This man and I could not ha...
