Thursday, September 11, 2008. Along with taking on growing your own hops, comes the challenge of packaging them so that they stay fresh. The first 2 harvests, I just packaged in Zip Lock bags, compressing the hops as best I could. There was a recent thread on the Grow Hops Yahoo Group. About Hop Pluggers and I decided to try and build one. In this post I will explain how to make a hop plugger, and hopefully prove that it's not that hard to do. 3ft length of 1.5 inch PVC pipe. 15 inch PVC coupling/coupler.

BrewTech: Copper Grain Filter for Igloo Cooler Mash Tun

http://brewtech.blogspot.com/2008/06/copper-grain-filter-for-igloorcooler.html

Monday, June 16, 2008. Copper Grain Filter for Igloo Cooler Mash Tun. In my first post, I outlined the process of how to build an Igloo Cube Cooler Mash Tun. Using stainless steel braid as a filter media. While the stainless braid works very well, you do have to be careful when stirring the mash not to damage the braid. Because of that, I decided to build a grain filter manifold out of copper tubing and this post explains what I did. And purchased the following items:. Could also use a hack saw):. For ea...

BrewTech: January 2007

http://brewtech.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 25, 2007. Wednesday, January 17, 2007. Igloo Cube Cooler Mash Tun. This post will describe how to make a mash tun out of an Igloo Cube cooler (could easily be modified for other coolers) for under $45. I purchased my cooler. I purchased at Home Depot. Approximate total cost of the additional supplies was about $27. Unfortunately, you do have to purchase 10 feet of 1/2 PVC pipe (though you only need a few inches of it), but at least it's pretty cheap. You now have a new Mash Tun! The nic...

Monday, June 23, 2008. Hop Growing Updates.moved! In an attempt to keep my hop growing experiment consolidated, and not have to sift through posts not relevant to my new hop garden, I have started a new blog: Hop Flavor. All previous hop postings have been copied over to the new blog and I will be documenting further updates over there. For your reference I am providing links below to specific hop related posts that were previously on the BrewTech blog:. Hops Update - June 19 Growth. In his online book&#...

BrewTech: Burner Modifications for Keggle Brewing

http://brewtech.blogspot.com/2008/06/burner-modifications-for-keggle-brewing.html

Saturday, June 14, 2008. Burner Modifications for Keggle Brewing. I've been brewing now for 2.5 years, and it only took one brew in the house for my wife to ask me to take it outside! No problem, we'll just do a few mods and be right back in business. First I needed to lower the center of gravity to make the stand more stable, so hopefully a keggle with 12 gallons of wort won't topple over. After looking the burner. Hop Flavor: November 2008

http://hopflavor.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 6, 2008. Election Day IPA - aka The Hop Bomb. Well, the first brew with homegrown hops is now in the keg.and a few bottles. I've decided to call it 'Election Day IPA' since it was kegged on election day. With the aggressive hopping of this beer, my nose was flooded with the aroma of grapefruit, causing my mouth to water during kegging/bottling. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Welcome to Hop Flavor! Hop Flavor: Hops Update - May 23

http://hopflavor.blogspot.com/2009/05/hops-update-may-23.html

Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Hops Update - May 23. Memorial Day weekend left me with a lot of work to get done, some of which I still have yet to do! The big agenda items were weeding the vegetable garden and working on the new hop trellis. As you can see from the picture of the cascades (left), the 8 foot trellis from last year was not going to cut it! Only 2/3 the way through May and multiple bines already wandering the top and twisting themselves together. New trellis.next post! Welcome to Hop Flavor!

Hop Flavor: New Hop Trellis

http://hopflavor.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-hop-trellis.html

Saturday, June 13, 2009. My first hop trellis was only about 7-8 feet tall, and by the end of last year's season, most of my first year plants had overgrown the trellis. So, I decided that the trellis needed to be taller and just hoped my neighbors wouldn't complain! So, what to do for the new trellis and keep from spending a lot of $ $? My helpers chillin out on the roof of the shed! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Hop Flavor! I created this blog to chronicle my attempt at growing hops, g...

Hop Flavor: Hops Update - June 12

Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Hops Update - June 12. Well, I'm finally catching up with posts for this year with this somew. Recent update on the hops progress. All the plants are doing very well, but at different stages due to variety and how aggressive I was when trimming early in the season. The picture to the right is of the entire hop garden, strung on the new hop trellis, and as of yet I haven't received any complaints from the neighbors! The goldings plants I started new this year (left) are. The other ...

Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Hops Update - August 22. Here in Oklahoma, we're still trying to get through the hottest days of the year, and yes, they. Have not been kind to my hops. My plants are still healthy and producing cones, but man they don't look too pretty anymore! As you will see from some of the pictures in this post, some of my hop cones and leave. My Goldings plant is producing more. And lastly, is a picture of the whole hop garden. It's hard to believe that just 5 months ago, this area o...

Hop Flavor: January 2009

http://hopflavor.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 22, 2009. Election Day IPA - beer review. I did want some constructive criticism on this beer so I entered it in the AHA Club Only Competition. With my local homebrew club FOAM. It did not win out against the other brews submitted by fellow club members to get submitted for the national judging, but I did get some BJCP. Average score of 31/50 wasn't bad for my first beer ever reviewed and brewed with homegrown hops to boot! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Welcome to Hop Flavor!

http://hopflavor.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 28, 2009. Hops Update - June 23. A quick (and late) update with a few pictures. The plants are still growing strong and the cascades are putting on more cones. They have also started to send out horizontal shoots which I hope will fill up with even more cones! The goldings is looking strong for its second year and I hope that I will be able to get some cones from it this year. The centennials have started to put on cones as well, although they are several weeks behind the cascades. Healthy, ...
