As usual, the trip starts with waiting about. This time in Virgin Atlantic’s Clubhouse . We get into the clubhouse as we used a lot of miles to get into Virgin’s Upper Class . Upper class is positioned as a business class, but has a better reputation than international first on a lot of airlines. The whisky selection (below) is better than at United’s London first class lounge. I opted for tea. Wednesday, May 13, 2015.

We’re starting off our journey on United Airlines. We managed to get into business class, where the accommodations were pretty good. The food was also pretty good, including a sundae with whatever toppings you wanted. I got caramel, fudge and whipped cream. Also on the menu were beef short ribs as well as cheese and port. Our trip starts out with a long hot day, punctuated by some interesting sights as we whizz past on the freeway. Starting in Central California we travel past Tehachapi and across the Mojave Desert. Along the way we pass Joshua trees (above), and death rays (below) (it’s a solar furnace really). Out past a lot of nothing, you cut through a corner of Arizona before getting to Utah. After a drive up Route 1, we arrive at our hotel, the Elk Cove Inn and Spa. It’s either in Elk or Greenwood depending on who you ask. The sun was setting, above is the view from our room.
