Day 24 | Caistor dig 2010
https://caistordig2010.wordpress.com/2010/09/11/day-24
Daily updates from the Caistor dig 2010. Day 25 →. September 11, 2010. It’s Time Team’s last day on site. Will we find the Iron Age, or can the director find a blinding excuse as to why we haven’t? The team wait in the tea tent sunk in gloom. Thankfully a well-known comic actor arrives in the form of Tony Robinson, but rather than come into the tent and say I have a cunning plan or similar to lift our spirits, he remains ensconced in his big blingy Range Rover. The director snaps a cheeky shot in the rain.

Daily updates from the Caistor dig 2010. Day 26 (the last day plus 1). September 21, 2010. It was a good season with good finds and lots of lovely people. Final visitor count was something over 5100 over the three weeks and the enthusiasm and interest of people in what we were doing really made a difference. Even on the rainiest days, people turned up bringing good cheer and occasional cake. So what did we find in the end? What happens at the end of the Roman period? The roll call of people who made this...

Daily updates from the Caistor dig 2010. The final entry →. Day 26 (the last day plus 1). September 13, 2010. The marquee comes down with a remarkable lack of comedy. Nothing blows away or explodes, so in terms of entertainment the whole exercise must be counted as a failure. However, if anyone is short on amusement and would like to see some utter rubbish associated with Boudica, may we suggest that they venture no further than the Iceni Mineral Water website. Daily updates from the Caistor dig 2010. Days 19 & 20. Day 22 →. September 7, 2010. Thankfully our rescue parcel of Roman product arrives, courtesy of the nice Mandy at Westair (purveyors of historically themed souvenirs to the gentry) and thus the good citizens of Norfolk will no longer be deprived of the right to own a Veni Vidi Vici pencil. Day 24 →. September 17, 2009 · 8:37 pm. Trench 2 in all its aerial glory. Giles carefully lifts the cremation urn. Highlight of the day though, is James (age 4) visiting the site in full home-made armour as his special treat and bringing us his finds. Archaeology doesn’t get much better than that. Day 19 →. September 12, 2009 · 7:38 pm. The answer, as ever, lies in the soil. Excitingly, this is being uploaded live from site via Charlie’s dongle, which has obviously been the cause of some Frankie Howardesque tittering. Big hoorah for Charlie for the use of his dongle. Here's Mike Page's lovely image of periglacial trench 1. Can you spot the circular thing that misled us on the geophysics? Filed under Dig Diary. Day 19 →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Day 26 and 27 →. September 18, 2009 · 10:48 pm. The church trench continues to be quite rocking, with more of our exciting late Roman gulley appearing. There is also an exciting cluster of 4 stones and, as all archaeologists know, you only need 3 stones to make a wall. It disappears intriguingly into the section, so hopefully we can find some more stones if the toilet scheme goes ahead and we have to expand the trench. An old lady, a bit like the one locked in the church by John P. Filed under Dig Diary.

Day 18 →. September 11, 2009 · 8:14 pm. It’s Thursday and all our trenches are working again, after a temporary respite for the stalwarts of the church trench. We are visited by members of the Association for Roman Archaeology and attempt to persuade them to buy some of our quality merchandise. They buy the last of John Davies’ Land of Boudica books, but a call to the author brings him down with fresh supplies within the hour. As if in miraculous response to the request yesterday for an aerial photo show...

Day 20 →. September 13, 2009 · 7:11 pm. It’s a day of new people, and also sees the return of Chrissy, cake baking star of week one, who returns with a picture of herself wearing her Caistor(TM) T-shirt at the considerably less interesting site of Skara Brae (see below). Mike P is absent, watching England get stuffed at cricket as an alternative to scraping gravel. Here's Chrissy at Skara Brae modelling some tasteful Caistor leisure wear. Filed under Dig Diary. Day 22 →. September 15, 2009 · 6:16 pm. The director obviously sees this as an opportunity to shamelessly court media attention, such is his disappointment at Anglia editing him out of their footage, presumably because he was waffling or his chin scratching didn’t come up to standard. Tomorrow there will be a media onslaught based around the mysterious Caistor body, but today the normal business of work continues. Sales push has switched to T-shirts now. Not many left so don’t be shy. Day 22 →. Middot; 2...
