Lough Erne, Ireland. This is a trip we did in the summer of 2009, we followed a canoe trail provided by www.cani.org.uk. And planned to follow the entire route. The Lough consists of two parts, Upper and Lower, with the Lower opening up to over 6 or 7 miles wide. The recommended start is Belturbet in the Republic, but we managed to start higher at Butlers Bridge. For a small fee we were able to leave our car at a new canoeing venture, the Carratraw Canoe Centre, www.carratrawcanoecentre.com.

Byfleet to Send on the River Wey, Surrey. This is on the upper river Wey, involving use of the canal and the original river for a bit of interest. Part of this route overlaps the previous river Wey route and the two could be combined for a long day out. We did this run with the Canoecamping club of GB and start in bright sunshine, finishing in a hail and snowstorm. Another one and half kilometres to the next lock, Newark, where one can see the remains of Newark Abbey. Pyrford lock and The Anchor.

Norfolk Broads, Stalham to Heigham Bridge. This is a nice paddle of about 20 kilometers. the wind can be strong at certain times and some of the Broads and rivers are quite open. We paddled this in October and had brilliant weather which made it all the more scenic. At the end of this stretch, you turn east onto the river Bure. This is wide enough for sailing boats and the traditional wherries under full sail can throw out disconcerting wash for the unwary. We also saw a Mississippi steamer with ...Somet...

Waiting for late arrivals. Leaky lock filling up the canoes! Oxlease lock, waiting to enter. Ready for the descent,. River widening out, open to the wind. Newby Hall, listen and look for the steam train. A convenient stop for lunch. Menhir in Boro'bridge, leave the campsite and turn left.

Bedford to Great Barford on the Great Ouse. A nice trip for a short afternoon, though two cars are necessay for the start and finish. It takes about three hours including the stop at the Danish Camp. My name is Colin and I have been a Canadian canoeist for about fourteen years, though I have done kayaking before that. I have canoed extensively in the UK and on the Continent with my family and friends in the Canoe-Camping club section of the Caravanning and Camping Club of Great Britain. This is a very friendly club who have encouraged me and coached me in their free time. I hope to add to this site as I get more photos. The CAM, Cambridge. The Lea, Hertfordshire. Great Ouse, Bedfordshire.
