Chapter 4: Mindelo

Now, it’s morning. I’m not sure what time it is. I’m not sure how long I slept. I think it was after midnight when I arrived. It might have been 8:30 when I went to bed. I’ve lost all track of time. I roll out of bed and walk to the balcony.
Chapter 3: Sao Vicente

Half of the plane’s passengers crowded the one room office only large enough for it’s desk and a guest. When I explained that I did not speak Creole, a few of the disgruntled passengers looked as though I were a ghost. I thought I might just become one. How could I come to Cape Verde by myself and not even speak Portuguese a man asked me. We agreed on the money, but what if I misspoke. What happens if he leaves me in the middle of nowhere?

It’s 6:00 am. Most people rush to the baggage claim. They are eager to meet family. Others will be shuttled to the hotels at the other end of Sal. This was an American flight. Americans don’t fly to Cape Verde for Vacation. Outside, there are only a few taxis waiting. The flight from Italy and the flight from Portugal won’t arrive for another few hours.

Logan Airport: 11:00 pm. The flight is late departing. A father watches everything from his video camera. His children run, anxious for our 7-hour flight. They misbehave, but he is bored and unexcited. He inspects the human cargo of our flight through the monocle of his high-8 camera. His wife is placid beauty. She naps in the seat beside him. He moves his camera over her head to avoid disrupting his shot.

Cape Verde - How I got there from the UK via Gambia and Senegal in Africa
Information on Cape Verde. Cape Verde is a wonderful place but at the moment its not easy to get information on how to get there, what its like, where to stay, or what to do (although the tourist trade is growing). My wife and I took an inpromptu trip there in April 2006. We travelled from Banjul airport in Gambia to Praia on Santiago Island via Dakar in Senegal. If you go there independantly or with a package, you might find our experiences informative.
