The Immigrant (1917) | Century Film Project
https://centuryfilmproject.org/2017/01/11/the-immigrant-1917
Celebrating the movies our ancestors loved. This was the third short. In 1917, coming out in June of that year. It may be the most famous of his early work, and has been a critical success since its release, unlike many of his earlier Keystone. Shorts, which were often dismissed as vulgar at the time or frivolous afterward. This movie begins by showing us a steamer ship. Hey, at least he’s upright! The exaggerated rocking at times threatens to make the audience seasick. As much as the cast! Funny walk is...
The Danger Girl (1916) | Century Film Project
https://centuryfilmproject.org/2016/12/31/the-danger-girl-1916
Celebrating the movies our ancestors loved. The Danger Girl (1916). Is the first Gloria Swanson. Movie I’ve reviewed for this blog. It’s probably not the sort of thing most people think of when they think of Gloria, but it does demonstrate her versatility and comfort in front of the camera. The movie begins with a quarrel between Myrtle Lind. Who may be deliberately imitating (or parodying) Theda Bara’s performance in A Fool There Was. Gloria shows up driving recklessly with her brother Reggie Morris.

This is sometimes called film’s “adolescent” period, in which audiences began to mature and demand something more than simple moving pictures; they wanted a bit of a story and identifiable characters. The nickelodeons. 1915 to 1929 or so: Sil.
Easy Street (1917) | Century Film Project
https://centuryfilmproject.org/2017/01/09/easy-street-1917
Celebrating the movies our ancestors loved. S first movie in 1917 has some surprising elements, including a reversal of his usual relationship to authority. Reflecting his improving budgets and extended production time, he built an entire street on a sound stage and used it to considerable effect. The movie begins similarly to The Champion. And other familiar shorts. With Chaplin as the Little Tramp. Sleeping in the streets. He awakes to the lovely tones of Edna Purviance. Now the action shifts to Easy S...

An Aging Broad with a Scrapbook. Thoughts on classic flicks. Monday, December 19, 2016. Season of Horror Wrap Up. When I began this ambitious adventure back in September. I truly had high hopes to be able to get through most of my collection of horror movies, but it feels like I barely scratched the surface, leaving room for Season of Horror II next year. Although I wasn't able to keep up with watching a movie a night and insanely trying to blog in real time, it was fun to try. View my complete profile.

Big V Riot Squad. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Selznick Practicing the "Poverty Flat" - February 28, 2015. Still survives and is very impressive. Most of the CMPC movies were destroyed in a fire. By the time of the ad above, the CMPC had moved its distribution from Alco, which was in financial trouble, to Lewis J Selznick's World Film Corporation.
