Chelsea's African Adventure

Friday, December 6, 2013. Hello blog followers,. Early in 2012 I posted a plea for funds to send my friend Coniba to medical school, and I sent personal emails to all who donated thanking them for helping to raise enough money for a year of tuition, so thank you! The letter I sent dated 6/2/12:. I want to sincerely thank you for your donations to my dear friend's education! In spite of this all and thanks YOU who donated, my friend. Everything is well here, and with you, how are things? Thank you again,.

Chelsea's African Adventure: May 2008

http://chelseamali.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 19, 2008. Work Project Update (kind of). Hey guys, it’s been awhile, sorry, life called! I think most of you have gotten a copy of my proposal via email, (if you’d like to get it let me know). UVM recently contacted me to write something for their Reunion weekend’s theme of the “environmental and sustainability arenas”. So, here is what I wrote:. There is also a women’s shea. As well a composting and waste management training. One-third of the Peace Corps. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Chelsea's African Adventure: October 2007

http://chelseamali.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 29, 2007. So, I’m having trouble deciding what to write in my blog, so any suggestions would be nice. Stories? What do you, the reader, want to hear? This time, I’m going to take an entry right out of my journal. This entry, however, is about my first trip to a Malian place of worship, in this case, the makeshift mosque in my village:. Do I really want to go? Will I be accepted, as they all know I’m not Muslim? How can I get out of this? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Chelsea's African Adventure: A Beautiful Life Remembered

http://chelseamali.blogspot.com/2011/06/beautiful-life-remembered.html

Tuesday, June 28, 2011. A Beautiful Life Remembered. I don't have too many vivid visual memories, but I remember a few things. The brown house with that shaggy carpet, orange - or was it green? Jeanne Bailey Ransom passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Monday, June 27, just before sunrise. She would have been 91 years old on July 4th. June 29, 2011 at 3:24 AM. This is lovely, Chels. See you soon,. Love, your favorite female cousin, Emily. June 29, 2011 at 6:48 AM. View my complete profile.

Chelsea's African Adventure: February 2008

http://chelseamali.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 5, 2008. My lady friends helping out. Would I get kicked out, or would they just look at me differently from here on out? Prayer at the outdoor mosque area. The old ladies (musokorobas) of the village in their finest clothing. One of the dugutigi's wives, Seitu. My host father, Bakary. One of my host mothers, Korotum. My friend Wasa and her husband, Yacou. Me, in my finest clothing. My language tutor, Sidiki and his family. Slaughtering of a goat. Some village boys all dressed up.

Laura in Mali: October 2007

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 26, 2007. Babies and children and sheep, oh my! I’m back in Sikasso after a little over a week in village. Salimata, Soumaila and I have continued to go to the other villages in the commune doing vaccinations and baby weighings. It’s been really nice to have some scheduled time where I feel like I’m actually doing something useful. Plus I’m getting to see some other villages and ride my bike a lot. I’ve definitely been useful as another set of hands. With our current system, I haven&#8217...

They take care of the twins while the mother works. Feeding porridge to one of the twins. My host father's daughter, Fatoumata, and her son Arouna and baby daughter. I did "jabi" for the occasion of leaving village. The crowd at my party. This old woman was always really annoying and asked me for stuff, but she was fun at the party. Balaphones at the party.

Laura in Mali: July 2007

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 22, 2007. N be Mali la. I don't know yet what language I'll be learning. I'm exicted for tomorrow, because we have a French placement test and our first interview with the APCD (I think that's Associate Peace Corps Director), which will have to do with site placement, and thus also which language we need to learn. I even went running this evening and it was just fine. It rained this afternoon which really cooled it down. Tonight I had my first experience with. Wednesday, July 18, 2007. I gue...

Peace Corps Mali had the best uniforms! Those are Dogon hats. Stephanie and Amy cheer on the team. Laura in Mali: April 2009

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 8, 2009. The country of Senegal owes me candy. Somehow months went by without my posting. well here are the highlights:. In January my friends Liza and Sarah came to visit. After they left, I spent a few weeks in my village working on a proposal for a well repair project. My village is a large one (about 2200), but lacks a functioning pump. There is one pump that is always broken - the few times it's been repaired since I've been there, it broke again within a few weeks. I went to the ex...

Laura in Mali: December 2008

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 15, 2008. How to eat a sheep stomach. In Mali, you occasionally find yourself in situations where, to be polite, you have to eat something you find really repulsive. This is especially pertinent during the holiday of Tabaski, called Seliba in Bambara (it is the most important Muslim holiday, occurring 70 days after the end of Ramadan). Last year I got pretty lucky and escaped eating anything but liver. This is the process I’ve developed for eating things I don’t want to:. In this most re...

Laura in Mali: July 2008

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 17, 2008. Sorry it's been so long since I've written. I can't believe two months have passed! I felt pretty discouraged when that happened, and now I'm trying to reassess the way in which I do work in my village. I spent a week in Sikasso at the regional program for malnutrition, thinking about what I wanted to do. When I returned to village, I didn't really say a big change in - well, anything, but I do enjoy being there even when work is frustrating. Luckily the trip back was a bit easier.

Laura in Mali: April 2008

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 27, 2008. Anyway, the reason that weddings all happen in April and May in my village is that our main cash crop is potatoes. Potatoes are planted in December and January, and once they are harvested and sold, families can repay their loans and use the leftover money to build houses and pay for weddings. The grooms each had a folded piece of cloth over one shoulder, and I was told that the bride’s father’s older brother gives that to him as a sign of his approval. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
