Organic Chemistry II: Fischer Esterification: 2-ethylhexyl benzoate

http://chem242.blogspot.com/2006/02/fischer-esterification-2-ethylhexyl.html

Thursday, February 16, 2006. Fischer Esterification: 2-ethylhexyl benzoate. Fischer esterification can be a time-consuming process, requiring days for a reaction to reach equilibrium. In this article, researchers developed a way to hasten this process by using a specially designed microwave to heat the reaction quickly and evenly and at an increased pressure. In order to test the efficiency of the device, they synthesized 2-ethylhexyl benzoate from benzoic acid and 2-ethylhexanol as shown below.

Organic Chemistry II: First week update

http://chem242.blogspot.com/2006/01/first-week-update.html

Sunday, January 15, 2006. 1) Students who came to the workshops got all of their technical issues squared away and we worked on alkyne problems. A few students also worked on their extra credit assignments. 2) You should all have completed lecture 3 by this point (alkynes). If you are having any technical problems it is imperative that you deal with this at the next workshop on Wednesday. Posted by Jean-Claude Bradley at 7:10 AM. Drexel CoAS E-Learning Main Blog. Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Happy Accidents: A Must-Read for Open Scientists. I usually limit my book reviews to Goodreads. But this one deserves much more attention. In Happy Accidents: Serendipity in Modern Medical Breakthroughs; When Scientists Find What They're NOT Looking for. Morton Meyers reviews examples of the unpredictability of scientific progress. And starting on page 304:. The peer review system forces investigators to work on problems others think are importa...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Saturday, February 14, 2009. Web based Spectra Game. Yesterday I used the NMR game in Second Life. During our 2-hour Friday workshop in CHEM242. We used a new location on Drexel island SLURL. However, there is a bit of a learning curve to get into Second Life and not all computers have a suitable video card. So it is nice to now have the ability to play the game on a web browser. Andy set up the game play so that the score reflects the number of correct answers obtained ...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Spring 2009 term post-mortem of CHEM 241 orgo course. Another term at Drexel is over. Following my previous post-mortem analysis for the winter 09 term. Here are some thoughts about how things went teaching CHEM241. 1) My Second Life extra credit assignment. And 3 more on FriendFeed. Leveraging the code that he used for the Spectral Game. Andrew Lang created a web version of the quizzes that I have used in Second Life and Unreal Tournament.

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Winter 09 term post-mortem: SpectralGame implementation. Our winter term at Drexel just ended. Following up on my previous post-mortem analysis. Here are some observations from having taught Organic Chemistry II ( CHEM242. 1) The big news of the term is that I had a chance to try out the SpectralGame. In my class for the first time (mainly to teach NMR). Andrew Lang first created the game in Second Life. 2) I usually provide a small (2%) extra ...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Wednesday, January 06, 2010. VLC saves the day - iTunes RIP. My first organic chemistry class ( CHEM242. Took place on Monday. That was the introductory lecture where I explained how my online-optional class works. The fundamental building blocks of this course are my recorded lectures. I was expecting the worst at this morning's workshop when a student suggested using VLC. Not only did it work but I could swear the resolution was far better than when viewing on iTunes.

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Post-Mortem of Cheminfo Retrieval class FA09. In the fall of 2009 I taught Chemical Information Retrieval. At Drexel as sole instructor for the first time. Last year Kevin Owens showed me ropes by co-teaching it with me. Here are some things I learned over the term:. 1) Research Logs work. In analogy to the Open Notebook Science. This certainly did not replace the weekly face to face interaction but it was useful for the days we did not meet.

How to Draw Resonance Structures. January 11, 2013. Common Mistakes: How not to draw resonance curved arrows. No discussion of resonance structures would be complete without mention of. How to royally screw them up. This isn’t something to feel bad about, by the way: there isn’t a chemist alive who hasn’t made one of these mistakes at some point. Think of it as a rite of passage. The trick is to make the mistakes while doing problems, not while doing an exam. Incorrect drawing of resonance arrows. One wa...
