Welcome to the Conservancy —. January 5, 2015. Welcome to our website! We are a 501(c)3 non-profit and the purpose of our organization is to promote seahorse keeping and build a club of people who keep seahorses in home aquariums and people who love these beautiful and friendly fish. Our main goals are:. 1 Educating aspiring seahorse keepers. 2 Breeding seahorses as an alternative to collecting them out of the wild. 3 Promoting awareness of local underwater habitats. Walt Haas a saltwater tank aficionado for 50 years discovered his passion for saltwater during his childhood summers scuba diving, collecting fish, and taking underwater photos at Westhampton Beach in New York’s Long Island. In 2011, he saw his first live seahorses in a friend’s tank. January 5, 2015. Here’s an overview of our entire operation. It has taken years of hard work, but we’re pretty happy with how we’ve progressed. There’s lots more to come! Everyone raises seahorses on a glass bottom tank with some plastic because it’s more efficient, said Conservancy director Walt Haas. But I never heard of anyone breeding them in tanks with river rock bottoms and seaweed. He takes this approach for 2 main reasons. First of all, it makes me happy I think of them as my children, he said.
