Chessbuff on Chess

http://chessbuffsworld.blogspot.com/2014/03/this-was-round-2-of-spring-swiss-at.html

Tuesday, March 04, 2014. In this position, black had just played 13.h5. Hitting my bishop on g4. My first inclination was to retreat the bishop to e2, keeping the F file open for the rook on f1 bearing down on the weak pawn on f6. I expected black, however, to close the position with 14.g5. I found the right move, not by following a line of analysis, but by recognizing a very weak square in black's position- - f7. So, I left my bishop en prise and captured with 14. fg6! I crashed in with 15. Nf6. At firs...

Chessbuff on Chess: December 2005

http://chessbuffsworld.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 30, 2005. Empire City Open 2005. After losing my first two games in the two-day schedule, I re-entered in the one-day schedule with the first three rounds played at G/30. I won my first round game and this position came up in the second round. My opponent figured he had found a brilliant sacrifice that would net him two pawns and a rook for a bishop. He struck with 29. Bd4. 30 ed, Qd4. And I countered with 31. Qf2! Protecting the king and rook at the same time. And we agreed to a draw.

Chessbuff on Chess: November 2006

http://chessbuffsworld.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 12, 2006. It's obvious that black is a bit unfortable in this position. If only black could get his queen coordinated with his rook on a1, he might have some chances at counterplay via the a8-h1 diagonal. Now that his queen is under attack, Lasker had to find a way to get out of the line of fire of white's rook and still defend the knight on f8. Lasker played 47. Qd6. Capablanca delivered the crushing and game-winning move 47. Qf8! Then 48. Rh7. Mate Fritz suggested 47. Ra8. Discovered c...

http://chessbuffsworld.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-final-position-of-smothered-mate-in.html

Thursday, December 25, 2014. The final position of a smothered mate in one of my games, these positions somehow always end up with a peculiarity that borders on the comical. Not only is the Black King and Queen forked, but the Rook on b8 is also en prise. Life just isn't worth living anymore once on the receiving end of a smothered mate. Chessbuff on Chess

http://chessbuffsworld.blogspot.com/2013/11/sometimes-one-finds-himself-in-most.html

Monday, November 25, 2013. Sometimes, one finds himself in a most enviable position where there are more than one way to win. Black had my passed E pawn pretty much blocked, but that came at a high cost. To have a rook and a knight blockading a passed pawn constituted a colossal waste of resources. This, however, did not take into account that the f8 square would be under attack by white three times if 35. e7 was played and a backrank mate was possible. Posted by Ted Teodoro at 4:42 PM.
