Minor Pieces: September 2013
http://minorpieces.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Sunday, September 29, 2013. DCCL Regular Season Finale. It has been a tough DC Chess League season for me this summer. I started by losing the first game against a 2200 in a long endgame at the company office. Then I had to return there just six hours later to run our summer camp training meeting the following day. Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Sunday, September 22, 2013. Monday, September 16, 2013. Minor Pieces: February 2013

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. The Reykjavik Open just ended with a three way tie for first between GMs Pavel Eljanov, Wesley So and Bassem Amin. The first two of those three players achieved the result by agreeing to a draw after the first three moves of the Gruenfeld! Maybe there is a reason for anti-draw rules after all. Thursday, February 21, 2013. Sunday, February 17, 2013. All Rook Endgames Drawn. The general...

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Friday, May 31, 2013. The Trouble with Long Games Online. The vast majority of my internet blitz games are played on the Internet Chess Club's 3 minute or 5 minute pools. Occasionally, if I want practice with a longer game or if I don't have a mouse around for blitz, I will play in the 15 minute pool. Unfortunately, 15 minute games online have a couple of unfortunate factors. 1 Fewer people want to play. Things ar...

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Thursday, April 25, 2013. I think there are two answers that are about equally good. Monday, April 22, 2013. Saturday, April 13, 2013. Next time I teach this game it won't have to be between made up opponents. Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Monday, April 8, 2013. Can You Refute My Novelty? I was aware that 13.Bd7 was a reasonable move, but I didn't see why I would want to weaken the defense of the b7 pawn when my ...

Minor Pieces: January 2015

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Saturday, January 3, 2015. This blog probably isn't really back from retirement, but I just came across an interesting resource in an online blitz game. I had white in the position below against a higher rated player. The computer pointed out to me, that not only am I OK in the diagrammed position, but I'm probably winning. Can you find a way to save the bishop? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Minor Pieces: December 2012

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Sunday, December 30, 2012. Year End Wrap Up: 2002. I was on vacation last week, so I didn't play much chess. Looking back a decade though, I had a memorable December tournament in 2002. I defeated my first three A-class rated players in the same event! The first of these wins was against BG Dennison, possibly the only person to ever play rated games in all 50 states. Friday, December 21, 2012. 7Kh1 Re2 and black w...

Minor Pieces: 1 Minute Gem
http://minorpieces.blogspot.com/2013/09/1-minute-gem.html
Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Sunday, September 22, 2013. I've been doing some tactics recently to prepare for the final match of the DC Chess League regular season. Despite my 0-2 score, the Silver Knight's team is tied for the league lead at 2.5-0.5 and I'm hoping to provide something positive before the end of the season. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Sunday, August 25, 2013. Washington International Wrap Up. This result left me at 3.5/9 for the tournament, and a performance nearly identical to my pre-tournament rating. I gained a single rating point to reach 2325, an easier number to remember than it had been before the nine-round marathon. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Washington International - Round 6. White had to sacrifice a pawn (he played 44. e5! I play be...

Thoughts from someone who still can't quite believe that he talks about chess for a living. Monday, January 28, 2013. Good Point On Opening Choices. GM Gregory Serper makes a strong case for 1. e4 as the best opening choice for young chess players. I usually like to let my students pick many of their own openings, but I tend to agree with Serper. You can find his article here: http:/ www.chess.com/article/view/positional-or-tactical-chess. Personally, I played exclusively e4 until I was rated over 1800.
