Chess Powa

Thursday, April 9, 2009. Ken Smith’s Chess Improvement Course. This used to be in the back of Ken Smith’s Chess Digest book catalog. Behind a door that many, if not most will never look, is Romantic chess. This Romantic chess starts with the opening or defense. For example:. White will play the King’s Gambit, Vienna Gambit, BDG, Scotch Gambit, Danish-Goring Gambit, or the Evan’s Gambit, and there are more. The ones playing gambits are examining the Romantic side of chess beyond a closed door. Your encour...

Chess Powa: I was wrong

http://chesspowa.blogspot.com/2009/01/i-was-wrong.html

Saturday, January 10, 2009. In an earlier pos. T, I said that I would probably never beat an IM in a real game. Well, it happened. IM Danilo Canda(2318)-Alex Steger(1997). 2008 Louisiana State Championship, Round 3. 1 e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bb5 Bb4 5. O-O O-O 6. d3 d6 7. Bg5 Bxc3 8. Bxc3 Qe7 9. Re1 Nd8 10. d4 Ne6 11. Bc1 c5 12. Bf1 Qc7. 12 Rd8 is a smoother way to defend- the knight can go to f8 and g6. Now the knight is passive forthe rest of the game. 47 Bg4 Bxg4 48. hxg4 Ng7 49. Qb3 g5. 50 Qxb...

Chess Powa: March 2007

http://chesspowa.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 26, 2007. 35/5, not bad. The Louisiana Pro-Am was held this weekend, and I scored 3.5/5 and picked up a few rating points. I tied for 2nd place and pocketed some cash. Overall, I am pleased with my performance, and I learned that conditioning and work ethic at the board factor heavily into success at competitive play. I also learned that opening preparation is far less important than analytic ability. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). 35/5, not bad. View my complete profile.

Chess Powa: May 2007

http://chesspowa.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 5, 2007. The Isolated Queen's Pawn. I played this today on ICC, G/25. This illustrates what to do when you have an Isolated Queen's Pawn, and when your opponent does nothing to stop you: you put your rook behind the pawn, and push it down his throat. 1 e4 c5 2. c3 d5 3. exd5 Qxd5 4. d4 cxd4 5. cxd4 Nc6 6. Chess Powa: Alex Lenderman escapes me

http://chesspowa.blogspot.com/2009/01/alex-lenderman-escapes-me.html

Monday, January 12, 2009. Alex Lenderman escapes me. Today I played IM Alex Lenderman (manest) in the ICC 15-minute pool. Black: Alex Steger 2046. I had 1.5s on my clock, to his 22s. I would like to say that Qf7 was a mouse slip, but it wasn't. Better luck next time, I guess! Man, it hurts my heart to see this game. Oh well, you will be playing with lots of NM, IM, etc. soon. Chess Powa: If you aren't struggling, then you aren't learning

http://chesspowa.blogspot.com/2009/01/if-you-arent-struggling-then-you-arent.html

Saturday, January 17, 2009. If you aren't struggling, then you aren't learning. When studying becomes easy. If studying is easy for me, then I must be getting better, right? Well, when there is a choice between repeatedly doing something hard, or repeatedly doing something easy, we all end up repeatedly doing something easy. We may have good intentions at first, but in the end, the result is the same. A few months ago, I bought Imagination in Chess. I felt pretty good about my playing results, and I felt...

Chess Praxis

Offering commentary on the royal game. I shall do my best to analyze games, including my own over-the-board experiences, and share thoughts on the current state of the game of chess. Monday, June 18, 2012. Posted by Joshua at 3:21 AM. Monday, July 07, 2008. So here's a good case in point. I was black here, and this is just the sort of position where I developed a pattern in 2007 of always striving to nab the a-pawn. 19Rxd4 and I went on to win after a long struggle. Here's another example, same theme.
