Christine in (the world): February 2009
http://christineinjinanchina.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Friday, February 27, 2009. Apartment hunting.and maybe we have a job! First the good news: we got a call today that one of the companies that we interviewed for is going to offer both Pat and I classes starting next week! Oh well, tonight is the hostel's weekly giant BBQ, so we'll leave apartment worries alone for now, and we have a place to look at later this evening, anyway. Monday, February 23, 2009. Way south of the border.

Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Monday, July 7, 2008. Travel Troubles: the northeast. I forgot the sky could be that color! So we scraped that and got a train to Shenyang, a big transport hub, to get a connecting train/bus to Dandong, a smaller city on the N.Korean border with a famous section of the Great Wall and a bridge across the river to NK, where you can walk as far at the actual border! Christine in (the world): China + Chile: from The Atlantic
http://christineinjinanchina.blogspot.com/2009/06/china-chile-from-atlantic.html
Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Wednesday, June 3, 2009. China Chile: from The Atlantic. My recent experiences are actually relevant to a current event! It actually had little specifically to do with China's relationship with Chile, but was a well written and interesting, if dated, travelogue. Imagine my excitement when theatlantic.com (website of the Atlantic. Photo also from theatlantic.com). Some comments and quotes from the article:. Began, that Asians a...

Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Thursday, June 4, 2009. Guess what day it is today. (June 4th). To the Chinese that date is "code" for the Tiananmen Square. That happened twenty years ago. What it looks like when an internet page is blocked by the Chinese government). I've read a lot of new articles about Chinese censorship related to this anniversary of this significant but "secret" day in recent Chinese history. Also, relating to the book. On the 4th, pree...

Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Thursday, April 30, 2009. So many daily things you never thing about being different until you live in a foreign country: trash pick up, household goods and appliances. here are a few of the things that confused or surprised me the first time I tried to clean/wash/cook:. PS: all photos taken from the internet. I hadn't thought to take photos of our stuff). I don't know if gas lines even exist here (because of the earthquakes?

Pat in Chile: June 2009

June 27, 2009. Medical Fun 2: Foreign Body! This was a mixed blessing. On one hand she got the undivided attention of (presumably) Jinan's eye wizards. On the other she witnessed them intensely discussing her problem, and evidently disagreeing over the correct treatment. Luckily, a clear decision was forthcoming. The most senior doctor grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her down onto the table on which she was sitting, announcing in forceful English: "Foreign body! June 25, 2009. At work the next da...
Pat in Chile: Something Deep About Chile, No Wait, Actually a Movie Review
http://patcurtin.blogspot.com/2009/05/something-deep-about-chile-no-wait.html
May 27, 2009. Something Deep About Chile, No Wait, Actually a Movie Review. Don't see Vicky Christina Barcelona. It may be the most pretentious movie I've ever seen, and I watch plenty of movies with subtitles. Also there's a really terrible voiceover throughout most of it and every time the brunette girl talked I wanted to bang my head against a wall. See No Country for Old Men instead. Something Deep About Chile, No Wait, Actually a Mo. Chile Report: Obama (II). Chile Report: Obama (I).
Pat in Chile: Getting Sick in Foreign Countries

June 8, 2009. Getting Sick in Foreign Countries. I’ve always said 'Humans need more animal blood.' It keeps the spine straight.". PS- I recently heard that my friend Charlie (who's teaching in Korea) came down with strep throat, and hopefully he's well. I also hope he won't make time to read this until after he's better. Pat in Chile: Chile Report: Obama (I)

May 1, 2009. Chile Report: Obama (I). And to that I'd like to add one thing. I don't care. At all. I'll do this as a comparison between China and Chile, like on Christine's blog. As well. I was instantly dismissed - "No, no in the US everything is much more civilized." A Chilean student told me a similar story when I explained the Blagojevich scandal. Everyone loves America, and who am I to complain? Something Deep About Chile, No Wait, Actually a Mo. Chile Report: Obama (II). Chile Report: Obama (I).
Pat in Chile: Chile Report: Obama (II)
http://patcurtin.blogspot.com/2009/05/chile-report-obama-ii.html
May 2, 2009. Chile Report: Obama (II). Second, foreign policy wise, one of the most controversial things Obama has done since taking office is to reach out to the governments of Iran, Venezuela, Russia, etc. and offer to talk. His chummy handshake. With Hugo Chavez was especially critized in the media. I'm not commenting on these moves in the grand scheme of things, but in Chile, and from what I can tell, in Latin America as a whole, the reaction is 95% positive. Chile Report: Obama (II).

An account of my. Wednesday, December 29, 2010. Summing it all up. Between traveling and spending time visiting family and friends, it's been a while since I posted here. I just realized that I head back to school in 3 days, so it's about time I said chau to this blog. I had no idea what to expect going to Peru. I knew that living in a shantytown would be a completely different experience, but I couldn't fully fathom it until I actually was there. PS I'm going to take one minute to insert a quick shamele...

Christine in (the world)
Christine in (the world). Here: This is what you can do with an English major! Monday, July 13, 2009. As a promised follow-up to my 10.000 pesos post, here is the equivalent (based on prices at the end of my stay in Jinan, around August 2008) for 100 Chinese Yuan (RMB). It's the only bill you can get out of an ATM, and almost no one wants to accept it or make change. At the time, it was worth about $15 UDS (at 6-7 yuan to the dollar). I don't really remember the prices at the supermarket. And that indulg...
