In the early years of the 20th century, Clearwater established itself as a premier destination for fun in the sun. In the 1920s, as word of the beauty of the area circulated far and wide, the city flourished. And then came Black Friday. The 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression descended like a dark cloud, ending the boom years. The immediate effects in Clearwater were seen in slowed construction. Some laborers and craftsmen were forced to leave the area to look for work. Part Six: Boom Days!

One of the town’s first mayors in 1896 was William R. Hart, who was also the first judge in Pinellas County. As Clearwater moved into the 1890s, it took on more features of an organized town. In 1891, it was incorporated as a municipality, and schoolteacher James E. Crane became the first mayor. Also taking office was Thomas J. Sheridan, Clearwater’s first city clerk. Russian immigrant and Orange Belt Railway developer Peter A. Demens designed the town’s first depot in the 1880. Fifty-two deeds were issued for homesteads on the Pinellas peninsula prior to the Civil War. Settling in, these homesteaders created self-sufficient farms which produced hogs, goats, sheep and poultry, and cultivated corn, cotton and sweet potatoes. Clearwater Hogs Spearfishing Club. The Clearwater Hogs are a Tampa Bay area group of spearfishing enthusiasts affiliated with the West Coast Council of the Florida Skin Divers Association. Meetings are currently held at 7pm at Peggy O'Neill's Irish Pub in Palm Harbor on the second Thursday of each month. Our aim is to promote the sport of recreational spearfishing, safe SCUBA and breath hold or freediving activities, and the conservation of the fish resources of the Gulf of Mexico.
