An area of bogland, forest and lakes it is dominated by the quartzite peaks of the Twelve Bens. Its official name is in Irish, Sraith Salach, and translates as dirty stream. Home of Connemara Marble. Green marble quarries are to be found on the lower slopes of the mountains. It is believed that green marble has been quarried in the region for perhaps 400 years. Because of its mineralogical and physical properties, it is a lot more difficult than the average marble to cut.
