A Climenhaga Home: The Heart of My Faith
http://climenheise.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-heart-of-my-faith.html
Sunday, June 28, 2015. The Heart of My Faith. Last year I spoke about how to read the Bible. I observed the value of reading the Bible as a story rather than as a collection of facts-truths disconnected from lived experience. The Bible is the story of how God redeems and reconciles rebellious people and restores all of creation. But we may still wonder: Granted that the Bible is the story about God and humanity, why do we need to read it? What does it matter? Luke begins his gospel with these words:.

A Climenhaga Home: Remembering Mother (Heise)
http://climenheise.blogspot.com/2015/05/remembering-mother-heise.html
Sunday, May 17, 2015. I wrote about my mother last week, but of course every mother’s day Lois and I remember two mothers—each other’s as well as our own. (We also remember Verna Mae, but that will wait for another blog.) I cannot describe mother as Lois remembers her; this is my story only. I have told the story elsewhere of the first encounter. Mother valued her relationship with God. She and Dad drove 30 miles every Sunday to go to church, often morning and evening. Dad was a deacon in the chu...She w...

A Climenhaga Home: April 2015
http://climenheise.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Thank you, BBC (a story about trolls). The BBC just ran a story on Internet trolls. We have become experts at de-humanizing each other. I want to be part of re-humanizing those with whom I disagree - discovering that they are people like me, or (if you prefer) that I am a person, like them. Monday, April 20, 2015. We went, and learned, and practiced, and I found I enjoyed dancing as much as she did. 8221; in my ear as we stepped, “One, two three.” From our three y...I wonder if i...

Sunday, July 27, 2014. The Attack of the Dragonflies! Then last week we tried sitting on our patio for dessert with some friends who had joined us for supper. As we sat there, a squadron of dragonflies. Appeared over the rooftop. Soon we saw dragonflies everywhere! We have seen them since several times - bigger than any other year, and full of mosquitoes. Tells us that dragonflies can eat 30 to hundreds of mosquitoes a day. Go dragonflies! Sunday, July 13, 2014. 8221; We might suggest that Jacob and Esau...

A Climenhaga Home: Summer of Birds
http://climenheise.blogspot.com/2015/08/summer-of-birds.html
Wednesday, August 05, 2015. We have had birds this year. First there were the grackles. Well today came the third episode of the year. (Does that mean we’re done now, since such things come in threes? I went in to the office this morning, preparing for the new school year. When I got home a note on the floor greeted me: There is a bird in the house. There’s a bird somewhere in our house, and I know that means nothing else happens until we persuade it to leave. I am not Saint Francis. We think that the do...

Our endless numbered days. A Long Rant Part II! Back in NY →. August 13, 2008 · 4:47 pm. With the summer winding down and the election right around the corner, I figured it would be fun to blog about the impending decision that both campaigns face: naming the vice presidential candidate. Article identifies his abortion stance to be in line with that of President George W. Bush . Not entirely impressive. Who are your V.P. favorites? I originally was going to non-partisan about this and give a little run d...

Sunday, September 21, 2014. Reading the Bible: The Church's Bible. From Lissa Wray Beal’s course on “Reading the Church’s Bible”:. The feast on scripture, which continually renews and satisfies our appetite. So this morning I want to help us understand how to read the Bible, our Bible, the church’s Bible. I begin with the kind of “principles of interpretation” that we used to always mention. They are still true, but secondary to the main point (which follows). Context, context, context! NT interprets OT:...

Friday, May 22, 2015. Remembering Mother (Verna Mae). My mother died in 1991. Two years later Dad remarried, and Verna Mae came into our lives. next week they celebrate 22 years of marriage- longer than many first marriages! Although she could never be the mother who carried me, she has been a good companion to Dad, and mother to my sisters and me and our spouses, and grandma to our children. Along with the work that she did over many years in the office, she has a straightforward ability to accept peopl...
