Pick and Roll: October 2006

http://clindeke-pickandroll.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

A blog from English 201 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sunday, October 29, 2006. Discussion from week of 10/23/06. This past week we discussed two readings. On Monday we talked about Sherry Turkle. S chapter Identity Crisis from her piece. Life on the Screen. The reading suggested that we are increasingly creating new identities through online games such as Multi-User Dimensions. On Friday we discussed the chapter Writing in a Culture of Simulation. Posted by Chris at 4:58 PM. In college, each t...

Pick and Roll: Some thoughts from the week

http://clindeke-pickandroll.blogspot.com/2006/11/some-thoughts-from-week.html

A blog from English 201 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thursday, November 16, 2006. Some thoughts from the week. 1 This one's for all of the basketball fans out there - I'm sitting here blogging and watching the Kings. Already has eleven assists -. That is absolutely unheard of - I think the record for one game is like 30, so he's on pace to eclipse that mark. 4 Thanksgiving will be a great break for pretty much everyone on campus. It seems like everyone is scrambling to study for exams, wri...

http://clindeke-pickandroll.blogspot.com/2006/10/making-case-for-nba.html

A blog from English 201 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thursday, October 26, 2006. Making a case for the NBA. Some of the people who saw this subject title may have already stopped reading. The NBA. Has such a bad rap, especially in a football-loving state like Wisconsin. In college, each team probably has a 30-game schedule, playing one or two times per week. Obviously, college basketball games are more meaningful. But games in the NBA are just as meaningful when it comes down to it - y...I tot...

Pick and Roll: September 2006

http://clindeke-pickandroll.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

A blog from English 201 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sunday, September 24, 2006. Discussion from week of 9/18/06. We started off on Monday talking about the introduction and first two chapters in Jeff Rice. With the cowboy. I thought this was a good reflection of what is portrayed as "cool" by the media. Young men see this cowboy on horseback, and he's laid back, rugged, macho, and confident all at one time. In class, we discussed Rice's example of James Dean photos. I thought the Hayles.

A blog from English 201 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sunday, November 12, 2006. Discussion from week of 11/6/06. This week we viewed the movie. Overall it was a pretty good movie, one that I thought tied in very well with our discussion of network culture. It especially tied in well with Marc Auge. S selection from his work. There were a couple of passages in particular that I thought were quite applicable to the movie from page 103 of the Auge reading. Here’s the first one:. Same old story - ...

Blogging for English 201 at University of Wisconsin Madison. Sunday, October 29, 2006. Page 256 is where she talks about MUD's and how they are used to create online personae. Turkle brings up Gergen's idea of a "saturated self" and how communication technologies create linkages between people's minds on page 257. Turkle uses the metaphor for the self of a home page acting like real estate, and connecting to each other by linking many pages all across the world on page 259. On page 269 Turkle comes to th...

Tuesday, November 28, 2006. I had never heard of the traveling salesman thing, but it makes sense. I like the idea of ants as traveling salesmen and how they instictively know, or figure out, the shortest route between not only a place but many places. If ants are leaving trails of pheromones along their paths, what are internet users leaving from site to site that allows us to use the same concept as the ants? What is bottom-up versus top-down. I understand the idea of each but examples would help.

Sunday, October 29, 2006. To be perfectly honest, I had trouble understanding both of this week’s readings. Even after our discussion, I left feeling perplexed. Naturally, I’m not sure which reading to write about. Anyways here it goes. Eenie meenie miney moe. Catch the tiger by the toe. If he hollers let him go. Eenie meenie miney moe. Sunday, October 29, 2006. Writing in a Culture of Simulation. It is a lot harder to take notes on something that already has underlining, circling, and comments in it, but I will try anyway. I don' t think it is bad that people may use these programs as a way of expressing themselves to someone without any consequence. Does it ever become a problem that the computer is not emitting any real feelings or any real sentiment? Another interesting aspect of the text was the Turing Test. The Turing Test is ...

Monday, September 25, 2006. Meg Hourihan on Weblogs. Meg Hourihan’s article on weblogging was very interesting, I thought. As I was reading, however, it was unclear to me who she was writing this article for. So I think her main purpose was to inform those that were uniformed, mainly the media, because she was tired of hearing about what they thought blogs were. Posted by Brittany @ 8:00 PM. Friday, December 08, 2006. On Tuesday evening I attended the Dreamweaver 1 tutorial presented at College Library. Having already learned a lot about Dreamweaver through English 201 much of the class was repeat. It was helpful to relearn it since it had been awhile since we talked about the processes in English. There were quite a few new things that they presented as well. This was especially helpful because I had not started my final webpage yet and it gave me some new ideas. It is a great tool to use.
