Some Men Are Brothers: A Street View abecedary: R is for Regen's
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2009/03/street-view-abecedary-r-is-for-regens.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Wednesday, March 25, 2009. A Street View abecedary: R is for Regen's. So I was fiddling with Google Street View, and it occurred to me that my long-in-abeyance London letters. Series, about the lovely vernacular lettering you can see on London's streets, would now be childishly easy to revive: Google has taken all the photographs. No more blurred shots! Or at least, no more blurred shots that are my fault. This could actually be good now. Type; art; design. Newspaper...

Some Men Are Brothers: Never read the label
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2011/03/never-read-label.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Monday, March 21, 2011. Never read the label. Here are three extracts from the packaging of a Pizza Express 'Sloppy Giuseppe' pizza. Extract one, from a list under the heading 'Cooking like a real Pizzaiolo':. Now most importantly, drizzle over a tablespoon of olive oil. Extracts two and three, from the ingredients lists for, first, the dough, and then the toppings:. I haven't eaten the pizza yet. It will probably be very nice. Labels: Nitpicking and related snark.

Some Men Are Brothers: London letters 1: Doorstep, Forest Hill
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2007/03/london-letters-1-sainsburys-mosaic.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Friday, March 23, 2007. London letters 1: Doorstep, Forest Hill. This is the first in what improvident ambition says will be a regular Friday photo series: the aim is to seek out interesting bits of lettering on London streets, with a particular relish for stuff that might otherwise be overlooked, and attempt to provide a little historical background. Our first exhibit is the doorstep of what's now a Red Cross charity shop at 6 London Road. Type; art; design. Type; a...

Some Men Are Brothers: Street View abecedary: J is for John, but which John?
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2009/03/streetview-abecedary-j-is-for-john-but.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Saturday, March 28, 2009. Street View abecedary: J is for John, but which John? The first product advertised is easy to identify: everyone knows. Its photography was famous. And its publication dates place these advertisements somewhere between 1938 and 1957. The second, broken panel is trickier. John who? If it's another magazine, then the obvious answer is. Wikipedia is entertainingly vague. Which itself comes to an end without any word of continuation in 1964.

Some Men Are Brothers: How to make someone enjoy a mediocre curry
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2012/10/how-to-make-someone-enjoy-mediocre-curry.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Wednesday, October 17, 2012. How to make someone enjoy a mediocre curry. The other day I found myself needing a late lunch near St Albans City station. (This is what will sometimes happen if you go for bike rides on your days off.) I went into a nearby pub that had a big menu outside. Hello Is the food still on? Ye-es Until three." (It was quarter to.). I'd like the chicken curry and a pint of the Tribute.". Would you like chips with that? Um Can I have rice? Essex, ...

Some Men Are Brothers: There is one thing wrong with the new Foyles
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2014/07/there-is-one-thing-wrong-with-new-foyles.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Tuesday, July 22, 2014. There is one thing wrong with the new Foyles. I was expecting to love the huge, shiny new Foyles. There yesterday, and bought it. But the way the magazines are stocked is wildly frustrating. Consider three magazines at the intersection of politics and culture:. They are none of them easily obtainable in Britain, and Foyles has the lot. Great! Now try to find them. Perhaps they're all on another floor) and politics seemed very heavy on quarterl...

Some Men Are Brothers: London letters 2: Dead shops, Elephant
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2007/04/london-letters-2-dead-shops-elephant.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Friday, April 06, 2007. London letters 2: Dead shops, Elephant. For the second in my new self-indulgent visual series. Yes, you're right, I should be on to the third, but I forgot - we go from Edwardian to a 60s/70s "eclectic" style that includes fake Edwardian; an altogether sadder class of period detail. This aggressively cheery lettering appears on the corner of a first-floor parade of shops in the Heygate Estate, off Brandon Street. Type; art; design. Vague gestu...

Some Men Are Brothers: Tell me a story
http://jaspermilvain.blogspot.com/2013/04/tell-me-story.html
A provincial hack's commonplace book. Sunday, April 28, 2013. Tell me a story. A sketch from the childhood of Kingsley Martin, future editor of the New Statesman. Basil Martin is his father, a socialistically inclined Congregational minister:. And was canonised from that day. Kinglsey: The Life, Letters and Diaries of Kingsley Martin. S centenary will have landed someone there the relevant book deal. I can hope. My stuff for the Guardian. My stuff for the Telegraph's book blog (finishing March 2009).
