He left behind his wife and 4 children aged 13, 12, 6 and 5. The youngest one is a girl. I can’t even imagine what would cause someone to do that. What turmoil he must have been going through. The very first song sung in Alejandria – the first song of the Rosary that was being said in honor and gratitude for the birthday of Jesús’ mom Dolores (but we call her Niña Lola). Tuesday, November 29, 2011. El Norte' is here. The strong-ish winds coming from the north blowing it's cold across the country. It's cold. I slept with socks on last night - and my jacket. Under 3 layers of blanket. I had a hard time crawling out of bed into the cold morning. Pobresita la gente dormiendo en la calle" Cecilia says to me this morning when I jokingly shivered while I walked by her on my way to get a cup of hot coffee. That put me in my place. Tuesday, September 11, 2012. If a Tree falls . So the question of the day is:. If a tree falls over the road and no one is there to see it (thank God) … did it really fall? WHO will clear it away? As we were driving out of town to take Blanca and Idalia home, heading towards Alejandria, someone from another truck yelled that a tree had fallen in the road and wasn’t passable. We kept going anyway. We made it about ¾ of the way down to Alejandria. As far as we could get. Getting out to take a closer look!

The first group came after only 3 weeks back from being in Iowa for my son’s wedding and we only had three days in between the two groups so I haven’t gotten much done. Such is life sometimes in the Pastoral House … and I wouldn’t trade the time with our delegations for naught. I could write volumes about the past two weeks with our two groups but I’ll be brief. Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Picking Flowers" in the back 40. We had one of those ‘charming’ breakfast discussions the other day … topics that seemingly pop out of mid-air. Oftentimes they are non-consequential … but sometimes they strike a chord in my heart. This was one of the latter. And of all the things to talk about at breakfast: latrines! Apparently they were pretty inexpensive! People would also need 2 sheets of metal lamina sheeting to serve as a roof. ProVida and FISDL had latrine projects.

Thursday, June 14, 2012. Mosquitos are an issue here… there is Dengue in the country (though not so much in Berlín – last year I think there were only 4 reported cases). There is some education about how to lower the mosquito population – but it is very hard to actually eliminate all the 'standing water' locations in which they can breed. Because they don’t need much. I know I have to keep a close eye on the pila in my bathroom (the water reservoir that everyone has because water does not run every day).
