Tales From The Clink

The content of this blog consists primarily of my experiences as a teacher of middle school English Language Learners (ELL's) in an academically underperforming school in western Massachusetts. Older posts include reflections on my work as a reading teacher of teen males in a secure juvenile justice facility. I teach where I think it matters most. I work with kids who come from nothing to help them see that they can be something. It hurts, but I love it.

Tales From The Clink: May 2010

http://commit2lit.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Tales From The Clink. Friday, May 14, 2010. Folks, this is to be my last post for a while. I've decided to shunt my blogging juices in a different direction, away from one thing I love, teaching in the juvenile justice system, and toward another:. Now you may be wondering why someone would want to add another food blog into the already well-saturated blogosphere. Who would read it? Http:/ open.salon.com/blog/katrocada. And, if not, thanks for following Tales From The Clink. Wednesday, May 5, 2010. I pre-...

Tales From The Clink: February 2012

http://commit2lit.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Tales From The Clink. Monday, February 6, 2012. I often think about writing. More often, and lately, I think about not. Writing. I am not writing. Sure, I write lesson plans (tons), and behavior reports (half tons), and scads of assignments related to my practicum and CAGS program and other professional development endeavors, but let's call a spade a spade. This isn't writing. I feel like I've ditched my kid. We do it before school, giving extra help to students; after school, when we are contracted to t...

Tales From The Clink: What Are You Going To Do?

http://commit2lit.blogspot.com/2012/11/what-are-you-going-to-do.html

Tales From The Clink. Saturday, November 24, 2012. What Are You Going To Do? Grade, I would turn up my nose at it the same way he did. In fact, every single book in the classroom stack of Walter Dean Myers' 145th Street: Short Stories. Was in seriously sad shape. Pages were missing. Most of the covers were ripped. I remember glancing up at my co-teacher, who returned my look with a “oh-well-what’re-you-gonna-do” shrug. Oh well. What are you going to do? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tales From The Clink: July 2011

http://commit2lit.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Tales From The Clink. Sunday, July 24, 2011. The Glow of Opportunity. And summer school commences. In early June, my school's ELL coach told me that the summer program had reposted the ELL Writing position. "I know you're not thinking about working this summer, right, Kate? She sort of sheepishly said one day in passing. No, I'm not. Or I wasn't. I hadn't been? I guess that's all it took. "Glowing opportunity" is the term that got my attention, but was I thinking of the kids' opportunity, or my own?

Tales From The Clink: June 2011

http://commit2lit.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Tales From The Clink. Saturday, June 4, 2011. Saturday School, Part 2. It's June. The weather out here in western Massachusetts is pristine, with a series of recent wild storms and tornadoes having all but scrubbed the skies clean. I look up and see clear, azure tones. I hear summer's call. And my students do, too. I can tell, easily: they're absent all the time now. This is progress. I feel the tiniest little victory inside when this happens, and I know that these moments represent learning.

Thoughts, memories, questions, rhymes and more from the students of Room 5C, a Writing Classroom in a Juvenile Detention Home. Tuesday, June 15, 2010. A Game of Pain. Life is like a game. A game that causes pain. Two people taken away from me. In a couple of months. Now I wonder who's going. To be next within the next couple. My head is spinning I can't. It feels like I've been put in. A straight jacket and taken away. I'm out of my dreams wishing I. Now I'm in reality facing my biggest fear.

http://room5c.blogspot.com/2010/05/monster.html

Thoughts, memories, questions, rhymes and more from the students of Room 5C, a Writing Classroom in a Juvenile Detention Home. Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Would you like it if the monster was calling your name every night, that he was so hard you can't take the pain? 1-2 they're coming for you. 3-4 they're coming through the door. 5-6. What's 5-6? There is no 5-6 because they did not let you go. That's the story of how the people you love can take the best of you. So if you've seen the monster, don't ...
