Hofstra Student and Faculty Computing. Students. Who ARE these people? Or: On the generation gap). May 16, 2013. Several faculty who attended Hofstra’s 75th anniversary celebration stated that they thought the cultural difference between students and faculty was bigger now than it had ever been in their experience. Some of my staff love to remind me that “kids are crazy” has long been a cry of every older generation. I can’t be the only one who sees the disconnect here. Don’t let your students side...

http://www.judithtabron.com/2012/08/15/the-business-of-higher-ed-for-faculty
Hofstra Student and Faculty Computing. The business of higher ed – for faculty. August 15, 2012. Behind these goals there are broader ones: to reduce the cost of higher education, and still give more people access to it, and to ensure that they are successful at it. So should this “business concern” affect the average faculty member’s class? Come back to haunt higher education, if not one’s own institution. That student might well not just drop the class, but ultimately might withdraw from the ...At leas...

Hofstra Student and Faculty Computing. Open-access textbooks, e-textbooks, and e-readers. January 5, 2012. None of these topics is just like posting readings in Blackboard, but none of these things is really the same as any other of these topics either, so let’s see if we can clear some things up.

Moving universities forward – Judith Tabron

Hofstra Student and Faculty Computing. October 11, 2011. Compared to London’s Underground or Paris’ Metro, the New York subway seems to be a mess. It’s full, it’s filthy, and occasionally it catches on fire. There’s a reason for this, I’ve been told: the European systems were largely rebuilt after World War II, thus leapfrogging New York’s system which is just as old or older but has had significantly less reinvestment and reinvention. Some of that is simple technical information that they don’t ha...

Hofstra Student and Faculty Computing. What’s with iPads? July 18, 2012. Every few years there’s a new consumer technology product that makes a wave in the public consciousness. Some of them make a huge difference to faculty and students; some of them don’t. How to tell the difference? If a tool changes the way people live and interact, then I always ask: why aren’t they teaching and learning while they’re doing what they want to do with that tool? Laptops let people have access to computers and communic...
