Cook Islands Library and Museum Society: The tiki and Marquesan art
http://cookislandslibraryandmuseum.blogspot.com/2010/08/more-about-marquesan-art.html
The tiki and Marquesan art. Above: Modern tiki figures in the Marquesas. The ancient Marquesans were ardent warriors, practiced cannibalism, and emphasised tattooing. The remnants of Marquesan culture which have survived feature stylised designs worked in wood, shell, bone and stone. Bark cloth, turtle shell, feathers and human hair, as well as dolphin and whale teeth, were also used in the manufacture of objects of great aesthetic appeal. CILAMS has a tiki in its collection (its age and island of origin...

Headrest vs seat / urunga vs no’o’anga. This picture shows three urunga in the CILAMS museum collection. Urunga are headrests but in a number of museums in the world they are often mistakenly referred to as seats (no’o’anga or atamira). In fact these three exhibits were once labelled as ‘thrones’. However two carvers on Rarotonga, Henry Tavioni and Gavin Aratangi have both recently confirmed that these items are urunga. Anything higher than 9.5cm is probably a seat. Maori traditionally considered the hea...

Tuesday, April 28. Anti-purse seine march on Rarotonga. Last Friday's (24 April) seine fishing protest march received plenty of coverage from Cook Islands News and CITV both before and after the event. Environmental NGO Te Ipukarea Society originally argued that new fishing licences should be halted, but so many members of the public wanted a total ban on purse seiners that TIS joined in their call. Radio New Zealand carried a story:. Protest in Cooks leads to fishing argument over bans. However the prot...

Dancer of the Year. How to get married in the Cooks? Carving in the Cook Islands. Some religious and ceremonial carvings appear to be so highly stylized as to be considered abstract. Some appear to relate to human form while in others this is less clear. Staff-gods from Rarotonga, carved from ironwood, some of which measured up to 18 feet, are also believed to be genealogical tools. A number of slab- and mace-god carvings from Mitiaro, Mauke, Mangaia and Aitutaki, held in overseas museum collections, sho...
