Our pigs live on dirt, with a hut for shelter. They spend most of their days rooting up the ground and eating every living thing. To supplement their feed, we give them plants and apples that aren’t needed elsewhere on the farm. They are not given hormones or antibiotics. We will have pork available this fall. We raise Red Ranger chickens for meat. They are fast growers, but do not have the health problems of the standard cross broiler birds. Red Rangers are also much prettier. They have a large pen outdoors where they spend most of their days, with full access to their insulated building. The young chickens are not completely free range, because they will get eaten by our local predators. We have chickens available for this fall! They will be ready in early October. We raise a mix of heritage breed and standard turkeys. Once the turkeys are large enough to be let out safely, they are completely free range and often spend their days walking miles along the ditches eating grasshoppers.
