Back in the USA. Sorry We've been away for a while. The news on Topping is good. Off to a Class 2 this week. He'll win. Love betting on the last round of a US tour event, epecially when the top of the leaderboard is full of players who haven't won on tour. Can Fowler get it done? The $1.79 on Betfair seems a bit skinny to say the least, but assuming he, Barnes and Petrovic all get the wobbles, there's some huge prices on Betfair for players who are more used to making winners speeches. Early doors, Stricker for a "two-peat". Sorry about this, but on the eve of the big man's return to pro golf, I'm backing Ryan Palmer again. Three doubles and too many bogeys meant that he didn't finish in the top 10 in the Crosby marathon but one round of 8 under was enough to show he's still in the game. You're welcome to the 8/1 on offer about Mickleson on his return but we'll be taking the 140/1 about the Hawaii winner. Golf magazines and me. Its been emotional. The late 1980's, long before the internet and social media, were a golden period for the magazine business. Desk top computers were taking over from the traditional publishing arts of typesetting and composition and new printing technologies meant that magazines could for the first time be printed cheaply and in full colour throughout. To my eye, both were relics of a bygone age. It seemed to me that as golf was growing, with new pay to play courses springing up...

Turn, turn, turn. Been doing a Faldo. Hidden away trying to perfect the swing and inevitably have hit the wall with this shoulder turn business. No turn equals sway. Sway equals steep attack, huge divots and missing a green with a wedge. That's bad. So after another night bashing balls at the range, I need to remember this. 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 and so on. Has to be easier than turning the core to face my knee. Another classic from the idiots at TG. Take it shot by shot. Will let you know.

Five under, 7 birdies. Had the pleasure of playing in an LPGA Australian pro-am earlier this year with French pro golfer Joanna Klatten. Woosie and the Killer Whale. Measuring five foot nothing and armed with forearms that actually were hewn from spending his teenage summers down on the farm, Ian Woosnam sure knew how to hit a golf ball. Using a driver fashioned, incredibly, from a lump of wood, the pint sized taff outdrove virtually everybody on the tour, sometimes hitting it over 250 meters. Wow. And then along came John Daly and his Wilson Killer Whale. Resembling a thimble now compared with modern clubs, the Killer Whale was huge.

Probably the most obvious difference between the pro game and the weekend golfer is the ridiculous distances that the top players hit their irons nowadays. Even swinging at 80 percent of their speed, we get used to seeing a caddy pull an eight or nine iron out of the bag when his master is still 160 meters from the green. Especially on par threes.
