Miraculously, we are alive, hydrated, and in possession of our phones and passports when we wake in the hostel the next morning. We prepare to head out to explore, but hesitate at the front door. There is a sign that reads “DO NOT GO LEFT OUTSIDE THIS DOOR. WALKING PAST THE EMPTY LOT CAN BE DANGEROUS.” Looks like we’re going right! Before I go to bed, I say a prayer for the kid, and thank God I’m still alive....
