Old Dog Syndrome – Writing Shed
https://writingshed.me/2012/03/08/old-dog-syndrome
Being sent to the shed is a good thing. Karen and Her Writing Shed. March 8, 2012. By Karen L Hogan. Our dog Tessa is fifteen and a half. That is something like eighty-five in human years. I come from a family that tends to live a long time like up to a century or more so eighty-five is relative to me in terms of being old. And Tessa has had enough attitude that when I say she is fifteen, people think I mean fifteen months. Finally, late in the day the vet called me with good news. Tessa in all likel...

Newer posts →. April 27, 2016. Here I am in Mississippi, an unlikely place for a New Yorker, for the Spring session of Mississippi Art Colony. I am a fulfledged member, having been introduced to it by an artist friend who lives here. We are housed at a sleep-away camp and like all camps, the food isn’t very good nor are the beds. But the experience is great! Here’s a look at the camp lake our first, foggy morning. It led to a very hot day. I’ll keep you updated on my developments here! April 21, 2016.

BRINGING ARTS TO AFRICA →. June 30, 2015. I have been a member of a group of creative cohorts for the last couple of years. They have provided me with support, inspiration and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on when things have gone awry. I am a visual artist- painter, sculptor, photographer- coloring the world. My travels take me to many places around the world and I love connecting with others at home and on my trips. I am also a teacher (art), business person and creativity and business coach...You a...

DRAWING IN THE DARK →. BRINGING ARTS TO AFRICA. July 7, 2015. Earlier this year, I was on a trip to Africa that took me to Malawi where I visited schools. The children were so lively and enthusiastic. They loved meeting us because we were from somewhere far away and their enthusiasm overflowed. I was traveling with a contingent from Books For Africa. These schools had no electricity, no lighting. The only source of light were clover-shaped cinder blocks that served instead of windows. We hope you will sh...

February 17, 2015. By Christy Spaulding Boyer. Machines beeped and the scent of sanitary plastic went through my nose, and I felt a wave of sadness. I quickly tucked it away. This is a different hospital,. I told myself,. In a different state, for a different reason. My son fell asleep, and I climbed into my bed at 9:00 my other habit going to sleep as early as possible, so I’m not tired when we are awoken in the early hospital hours. May 26, 2015. As we unpack, he tears up the boxes,. Calling himself Godzilla. He won’t eat. At the new table. In the car, he asks again. And again the street names, trying to learn. The way home. He begins to scratch. His leg. Fish sticks every night for dinner. The tiny space between the two doors. Of the school bathroom unnerves him. The rough patch on his elbow matches. His leg. At circle time he walks away. And finds a piece of lint. He says. He doesn’t need to pee when he wakes up. Was published by ...

Use Your Words | Monday Coffee & Other Stories
https://motheringkidswithspecialneeds.wordpress.com/2015/03/03/use-your-words
March 3, 2015. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about words how I use them, how my non-verbal son tries to use them, and how people who have been traditionally left out of the conversation about themselves use them. I’ve been thinking about how Martin Luther King. The Saudi blogger now being tortured for creating a liberal blog) have used their words to fight injustice, give voices to marginalized groups, and who suffer deeply because of their what they have to say. Each semester, I teach What I Saw.

That’s Why They Call It a Spectrum. April 14, 2015. That’s Why They Call It a Spectrum. It’s April, which means it’s Autism Awareness Month. Given that I have a smart, stubborn eleven-year-old daughter with autism, April doesn’t feel different than any other month of the year. Every month is autism awareness month in my house. But I know that isn’t true for many households, so I think it’s wonderful that we have a month to help people understand an often misunderstood disability. We joked about it being ...

DRAWING IN THE DARK. PICKING PATTERNS →. STRUGGLING WITH THE CHALLENGE. July 28, 2015. As I was struggling with what to write for this week’s blog entry. I was complaining about it to a fellow artist that I hadn’t completed any new work to share here. In fact, I have been kind of stumped lately. I have hardly worked on my art in the last few weeks. This painting got started in Mississippi Art Colony and I have worked on it for a while. It’s a biggie-4 foot square. I continued with an impressionistic pain...

A mom out to save America, one baby step at a time! The Fake Women’s March. Affluent women in America began to conform and shape their identities around the model of Feminine Mystique, ignorant of the fact that Pussy Betty was nothing more than a community activist whose mystique was being used as a progressive vehicle to promote her hardcore radicalism. Horowitz revealed that Friedan, known previously as Betty Goldstein, had been involved with radical leftist activism since her first days at Smith Colle...
