This file began when a Flight Simmer asked me about the layout of Mingaladon airport in 1941-42. Here's the best answer yet, from the appendix of Erik Shilling's autobiography. It is based on a 1942 CAMCO diagram of the airport outside Rangoon, complete with the final assembly and test area to the south (the hoist, "mat sheds," and two-plane hangar). This diagram first appeared in Flying.

Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time: all about Albertine
http://www.readingproust.com/albertin.htm
The most important character in Proust's novel is Albertine Simonet, who first appears in Young Girls in Flower. As an elusive member of the "little gang" of girls at the seashore. When Marcel visits her hotel bedroom and tries to kiss her, she defeats him by threatening to ring the service bell. In The Guermantes Way. The situations are reversed: she visits his. This situation likewise reverses itself: in Sodom and Gomorrah. Had appeared in 1913, but the war caused a five-year hiatus before Young Girls.

Marcel Proust, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower (Withina Budding Grove)
http://www.readingproust.com/shadow.htm
In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower. Marcel makes quick work of Gilberte Swann. As with Swann before him, the more desperately he loves the girl, the less interest she displays in return. So he decides to put his love on ice, while maintaining his friendship with her parents. He also meets the Baron de Charlus, who deigns to make a move on him, an overture which only mystifies Marcel. Evolving characters, revisiting the past. One of Proust's great themes (and talents! Is showing character and how it m...

How these websites work. My websites are text-based. I am, after all, a writer! Anyhow, I started putting these pages online in 1992, before there was any software to gussy up the internet. After all these years, I still don't see the point of the jumpy graphics and clashing colors I see in so much of my browsing. By me or by folks who allow me to use their stuff. If I've used your material in a way you think inappropriate, please send email. My websites set no cookies and collect no information about my...

She was actually 40 that August.) Even so, it's a goldmine for Flying Tiger buffs. A collection of five essays I wrote abo...

What would Marcel make of the Kindle? Amazon.com and the publishers have made a royal mess out of the dueling translations of In Search of Lost Time. Anyone can buy digital books from the American storefront, but there's generally a surcharge, so if you live in the UK, you should buy through those links.). Vol 1 - The Way by Swann's. I was entranced to learn, in William Carter's superlative and Proust-sized biography. By this time he was seriously ill. He ate little and almost never went out in public. However, the host was Sydney Schiff, an English admirer and a longtime friend who under his pseudonym Stephen Hudson would one day translate the final volume of the Search. The Priso...

Marcel Proust, Lydia Davis, William Carter: In Search of Lost Time, vol. 1: Swann's Way
http://www.readingproust.com/swann.htm
Du côté de chez Swann. Also translated as The Way by Swann’s. The two-minute “Swann”. I should note that Proust might have protested this interpretation. After all, he chided his translator for the ambiguity of the English title: better, he said, to have called it “The Way to Swann’s.” It is perhaps for this reason that one new translation, in Britain, is called The Way by Swann’s. Again, this error of Swann’s will be repeated by both Marcels, the actual Proust and his fictional protagonist. Bu...Flash f...
