Danica in Asia

Wednesday, July 19, 2006. The killing fields and Tuol Sleng. A few weeks ago, we visited the killing fields at Choeung Ek, and Tuol Sleng, the infamous Khmer Rouge prison that is now a memorial museum. Right in front of the entrance is the chedi erected in memory of those who were murdered here. Behind panes of glass, high high up, skulls are arranged on shelves, organized by gender and age. At the very bottom is a pile of grey clothes, a pair of tattered sandals lying in front. Mr Chek translates for us...

Danica in Asia: CRICKETS--and a wedding and an embassy party

http://www.danical.blogspot.com/2006/07/crickets-and-wedding-and-embassy-party.html

Monday, July 03, 2006. CRICKETS- and a wedding and an embassy party. OK, first things first: guess what Tony and I tried at Central Market on Sunday? Deep-fried crickets. They were actually very tasty- crunchy and kind of nutty. The legs hurt a bit because they poke you in the cheeks when you pop the cricket in your mouth, but otherwise an excellent snack! Hope everyone had a great Canada Day! Posted by DLam @ 7:03 AM. View my complete profile. And more photos in Phnom Penh.

Danica in Asia: Photos from Kampot

http://www.danical.blogspot.com/2006/06/photos-from-kampot.html

Wednesday, June 14, 2006. This is the abandoned hotel at the top of the hill station. Very spooky- think, "The Shining"! We actually had a flat tire on the way down the hill, but it was a good learning experience. We have beautiful pictures of the ocean (what a colour blue! From the top of the hill, but I forgot to bring those with me. Maybe for the next post! Posted by DLam @ 7:10 AM. View my complete profile. Greetings at last from Phnom Penh.

Sunday, June 25, 2006. And more photos in Phnom Penh. Some construction workers at a building site next to us. It's crazy how they can balance so nonchalantly up there! Scrubbing in with Dr. Ngiep on a cleft lip. (That's me on the left, in case it's a bit difficult to tell.). Some of the hospital staff at the "housewarming" party we had on Friday night. Fruit at "Russian Market", or Psar Tuol Tom Pong. Notice that lovely pile of dragonfruit in the front there! Posted by DLam @ 1:55 AM. See how high the w...

Danica in Asia: Greetings at last from Phnom Penh

http://www.danical.blogspot.com/2006/06/greetings-at-last-from-phnom-penh.html

Wednesday, June 14, 2006. Greetings at last from Phnom Penh. It's been almost two weeks since we left, so I guess it's time to post something so that you all know I haven't dropped off the edge of the world! Posting this from Phnom Penh, in case that wasn't clear, where we're very happily settled right now. Phnom Penh is big and busy (gotta love the traffic! The almost 100 acid burn patients that CSC has treated in the past 7 years. Next post: some photos from our weekend trip to the southern coast.

The adventures of a student trying to find his way in lands less foreign than they at first appeared. Tuesday, May 24, 2005. A lot of things have been happening here recently. The adventures of a student trying to find his way in lands less foreign than they at first appeared. Friday, August 19, 2005. There are two topics that are central to understanding life in Cambodia about which I still haven’t written. I didn’t want to try and tackle them until I felt I could do them proper justice. Though I’m still not sure that I can, I’ve tried my best to do so below. A Victim of the Genocide. Tree on which Babies were Killed at Choeung Ek. The answer itself is very Cambodian. Wit...

The adventures of a student trying to find his way in lands less foreign than they at first appeared. Sunday, July 30, 2006. Après la Mort, la Vie Continue. Just across the Ugandan border, the road provides its own stern warning: the charred skeleton of a petrol truck, lying at the bottom of a hundred-foot black scar. The smoke has mostly cleared as we drive past. I am in Rwanda at the invitation of my friend Aska, a Polish medical student I met in Cambodia last year. Just feel the music. Much better!
