Notes by the Solway: October 2013

Wednesday, 2 October 2013. The Great Battery Scandal. Now here's a thing. Batteries. When that gadget starts failing, we just assume the batteries have nearly run out, and put new ones in. The old ones either get recycled or just chucked in the bin (which we're really not supposed to do). Any idea how much power is left in them? So how much power is being wasted, producing batteries that aren't even half-used? Does such a thing exist? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). There are worse places to live. View my co...

Notes by the Solway: April 2010

Tuesday, 13 April 2010. My mother, who, unlike my father, was not really a German scholar, had a little German nursery rhyme which she'd recite every time we saw a ladybird. Most English-speaking children, of course, will come out with some variant on this one:. Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home! Your house is on fire and your children alone! I had no idea how to spell many of the words. Here's Vere's version, anyway:. Johnnes Würmchen, flieg! Dein Vater ist im Krieg,. Dein Mutter ist im Pomerland,.

Sunday, 26 January 2014. CHILDHOOD MEMORIES FROM THOMAS MORGAN McGURK. My dad - Thomas Morgan McGurk (better known as just Tommy) - grew up in the early years of the 20th century in the Old Town of Edinburgh, which was pretty rough in those days. I don't know when he scribbled down the following memories, but it was probably in the 1970s sometime. Really fascinating stuff! And who today remembers “Jack Paul’s? Time smudges the memory, and in its whimsy, creates false memories. Jack Paul! The ears of a ch...

Notes by the Solway: August 2008

Friday, 22 August 2008. Someone's nicked my shoes! I left them on the bench in the women's changing rooms while I used the gym at Cockermouth Leisure Centre, and when I got back, they were gone. I was quite sure they'd just been tidied up by some over-consciencious member of staff, but it seems they really have been stolen. I'm appalled! Of course I complained, and now they tell me that I'm quite welcome to use the swimmers' lockers! That wasn't what I was told when I joined. I am not happy. For one thin...

Notes by the Solway: June 2008

Saturday, 28 June 2008. Well, all that working out seems to have made my back stronger already, as I was only incapacitated for a few days, rather than the usual couple of weeks. I can actually feel. Some of these new muscles. If I lie on my back it's like I'm lying on something hard, until I realise it's a couple of muscles that run vertically down the back on either side of the spine. Heh. I've lived all this time without noticing they were there! The gym has big wide-screen tellies. They've recently e...

Notes by the Solway: December 2011
http://solwaynotes.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 27 December 2011. A new Christmas song. I'd like to introduce you to a brand new Christmas song, composed and performed by two very good friends who live in Norway: Edith Nilsberg and Orlando Ortiz. Edith, a Cumbrian, and a gifted singer throughout her life, has composed the song, and after a couple of years during which her singing has taken a back seat, her voice is very much back on form with this new number. Click here to listen to Merry Christmas. By Edith and Orlando. A new Christmas song.

Notes by the Solway: November 2010
http://solwaynotes.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Friday, 5 November 2010. This is a song I remember from very early childhood on BBC's Listen With Mother. I can't find any reference to it online. It was probably one of those very ephemeral things that was written for one episode of the programme, sung and forgotten . except that I'm sure they sang it quite often. I can remember almost all of it except for part of one line. Whenever I'm walking in the rain, I find it going through my head. Here are the lyrics:. Horniman and Sir,. Off we go together.
