Saturday, November 03, 2012. After she passed away I felt the world was playing a cruel trick on me. I had just lost my mother and now was expected to go to work everyday to continue to help mother's bring new life into the world, often accompanied by their own mother's to guide the process. How could I do this? In the first few months I often had to step out of the room of my laboring patient to compose myself, too overwhelmed by the story that would never be mine. Our Thanksgiving meal yesterday consisted of a lovely 2pm feast followed by a breathtaking walk at the base of the Wallowa Mountains and topped off with apple pressing to produce homemade cider. The opening speaker began and the crowd was soon hushed as the speaker took us through the stories of her work with victims of violence, prostitution and sexual slavery that were at once horrifying, mesmerizing and moving. As Becca Stevens. I felt proud as Becca shared her moving story that such a speaker would be invited to open a conference on midwifery. Tuesday, January 01, 2013. I can't stop thinking about the gang rape of the 23 year old woman in New Dehli. For awhile every time that I checked the news I scrolled past the headline, too horrified to open the link and read what promised to be a gruesome story. Then I finally did. And it was. I know there are many awful things in the world. Everyday. But I can't stop thinking about this awful thing. How is this the world we live in? Where is there redemption?
