The case for destroying data. So as part of our Privacy Policy. We let our users know that at their request, we will destroy all identifiable information we have on them on our system. The need for this sort of feature is understandable. Some people might not want to continue using your site. They’d feel uncomfortable with you having identifiable information in that case. I understand there’s an actual issue in play. I understand that the user wants to have his tracks revoked. Option 1: delete some rows.

Rack app from the ground up

http://davidjairala.github.io/ruby/2015/12/03/rack-app-from-the-ground-up

Rack app from the ground up. Recently I began work on a new Ruby application where I decided that something like Rails. Would be overkill, heck, even something like Sinatra. Would be too much. The best course of action was to just write a straight-up Rack app. I figured this would be a good opportunity to write a little blog post on how to hook up most of what you would need in a barebones app like this manually to get up and running. By the end of this post, we’ll have a clear understanding of everythin...

Switching from Mac OS to Ubuntu

Switching from Mac OS to Ubuntu. For a while now I’ve been feeling a very strong desire to leave behind the Apple ecosystem, starting with my trusty Retina Macbook Pro 15 . Don’t get me wrong: it’s a beast of a machine with just fantastic build quality. More than that, it does pretty much all I need it to do in a very eficient manner. However, as time goes by I keep working more and more with open-source software, either creating some or using a lot both for work. I’ve been researching the laptop for a c...

Drinking

http://davidjairala.github.io/life/2014/06/28/drinking

It’s been a while since I quit drinking. 8 months now. I don’t feel like it’s gotten easier over the months to stay sober. There’s random moments where I’ll feel an unquenchable thirst. I’ll envision myself drinking a very large whiskey. I can barely taste it right now just writing about it. One thing that does become annoying is people telling you to go ahead and have a drink. My favorite is when they tell you stuff like oh go on, just have one! You don’t HAVE to get drunk, you know?

Why you should keep 3rd party providers locked inside wrapper classes

http://davidjairala.github.io/ruby/2015/03/19/3rd-party-wrapper-classes

Why you should keep 3rd party providers locked inside wrapper classes. I was recently reading the sad news about Balanced Payments shutting down. I was a fan of the company, so of course this article struck a chord. But I also found it interesting that a lot of people were downtrodden about the prospect of having to go through their codebase and replace all calls to the Balanced API with a replacement ( Stripe. Or anything similar to that, be it Airbrake. Or anything, there’s room for improvement! Anothe...

David Jairala | Random!

The rise of online TV? So yesterday I was checking out Joost. While finishing to setup some of my favorite TV shows (Entourage, Family Guy, American Dad, etc.) on Democracy. Via RSS feeds, when I stumbled across this article via Techcrunch. 45% of europeans watch TV online. Now granted this only refers to 45% of broadband users in Europe, but still, I think that’s a pretty big number considering the whole boom of video on the internet happened like a year or a year and a half ago.
