Heartbreaking Prose | Dave's Nightstand

https://davidkeck.wordpress.com/2007/09/03/heartbreaking-prose

What One Writer is Reading. In the fantasy genre, David’s latest find has been Catherynne M. Valente’s. The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden. Valente writes in glittering, magical prose and the stories she tells are wry, unique, and sometimes deeply profound. I read that she’s also managed to get short-listed for the World Fantasy Award this year, so congratulations are due. By keckd on September 3, 2007. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Not Fishing | Dave's Nightstand

https://davidkeck.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/not-fishing

What One Writer is Reading. I often think of hockey arenas when I think about writing. There’s something about the huge (but finite) numbers of fans in the seats at a hockey arena. When a player steps out in front of the crowd, they are instantly under the gaze of 15 or 20 thousand people. While I am forced to guess at how the cheers of a multitude might feel, I do know just how lovely it is to receive the very occasional cheer from a solitary, patient “fan.”. Imaginary Beings | Dave's Nightstand

https://davidkeck.wordpress.com/2007/11/27/imaginary-beings

What One Writer is Reading. After a recent trip to the American Natural History Museum, David found himself with a copy of. The Book of Imaginary Beings. By Jorge Luis Borges. This is a stylish reprint and translation of a Spanish original, published in 1967. Presents an unusual blend of poetry and encyclopedia, with each thoughtful entry introducing a new inhabitant of the worlds of myth or literature. By keckd on November 27, 2007. Dexter & the Opposite of Midi-chlorians. | Dave's Nightstand

https://davidkeck.wordpress.com/2007/10/21/dexter-and-the-opposite-of-the-midi-chlorian

What One Writer is Reading. Dexter and the Opposite of Midi-chlorians. David has just been reading Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter novels, having seen an episode or two of the Showtime series. At first, he was put off by the rather convenient high concept notion that a serial killer might channel his homicidal impulses to killing the bad guys. On a number of levels, the notion of a sadistic vigilante is troubling. By keckd on October 21, 2007. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Blog at WordPress&...

Riverdale Tornado - The Maundry

http://davidkeck.livejournal.com/71975.html

Jul 26th, 2010 at 7:35 PM. The toddler and I were hanging out at the old homestead yesterday when it the sky went dark and a lovely horizontal rain lashed the building. I have now learned that we narrowly avoided the local tornado. (! Yikes: http:/ bronx.ny1.com/content/top storie. The day before we huddled briefly under a tornado warning. Enough with the twisters, already. This meant to be a nice neighbourhood. Should I be buying the toddler a small perky dog with a name that starts with "T"? Tolle Home...

The Wilderness Above the Bronx - The Maundry

http://davidkeck.livejournal.com/71366.html

The Wilderness Above the Bronx. Jul 15th, 2010 at 11:12 PM. Writing on the large flat stone above the Bronx was reasonably successful this afternoon. (I had at least one idea that seemed very good at the time - and I've written it down). I was, however, gradually surrounded by a cadre of Bronx mountain squirrels. They were sly. I could, at first, see the little creatures in the middle distance doing apparently-natural squirrel things. (Frisking. Hopping. Tail fluffing). 1 comment Leave a comment.

Mar 9th, 2014 at 6:22 PM. So, my tax man suggests that I keep doing cartoons. Did you know I was doing cartoons? I will have mentioned it somewhere - probably Facebook). Id imagined that every penny a cartoon earned would be snapped up by Uncle Sam (long may he reign), but it seems that making a pittance periodically was somehow very astute. This news has inspired me to dust off my iPad. (Ill try throwing something out there again this week.) The last web-worthy one was up in Suvudu. View my Tags page.

First Draft Woes: Abominating Repetition. Feb 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM. I have a mania for certain words that might need to be explored:. Why, for example, would I choose the word "churn" fifteen times in the same. Manuscript when "butter" appears only twice? What is in my head when, of all the words in the language, I use "torrent". Eight times, "cataract" five times, "wrench" twenty-four times? Pops up fifty-six times, and "turn" seems to be roughly every second word. And I'm not finished). Might break th...

Giant Hamsters from the Moon, Clearly - The Maundry

http://davidkeck.livejournal.com/71551.html

Giant Hamsters from the Moon, Clearly. Jul 25th, 2010 at 2:03 PM. Our ancestors were hamsters. Clearly. And possibly aliens. I ran into an intriguing article (probably only to me) about Ye Older cranes while figuring out how to move a gaggle of characters from here to there (in the days before the elevator): The sky is the limit. And, of course, this ingenuity doesn't quit with the henges and outsized geometric solids of ancient times. It just about turns my head inside out. 2 comments Leave a comment.

Writing around a full time job and family is, for me, as tricky as it is necessary. This summer I worked up a pretty meticulous outline for a next book: The Serpent’s Walk. But, since then, I have had no end of trouble getting rolling: an immensely frustrating experience all hemmed in with self-doubt, suffocation, self-pity, distraction, and similar critters. I’ll update you soon. July 26, 2017. July 26, 2017. The Summer of Plots. For years, I...

A high school chess geek, a reluctant white supremacist, a narcoleptic assassin, and a President with a twitter account. What could possibly go wrong? TWEET a satire by David Kedson. Eight months after his inauguration, President Edward N. Passant is consumed with two things: securing himself a third. Term and fighting a twitter war with a high school sophomore who unintentionally insulted him. More realistic than the statements coming out of the White House these days.".
