David Paltiel :: Summer 2007 :: Austria, Bavaria, & Liechtenstein

Sunday, July 29, 2007. I had very low expectations for Zürich. I thought everyone would be in business suits and the city would have nothing but banks, but I really enjoyed the couple of museums I went to. The city is situated at a riverhead (like many cities in Switzerland), which makes for perfect scenic strolls. Filled with paintings. Though there was a bad fire in 1993, some of the paintings are still on display. The only other thing I saw was the Löwendenkmal. My favorite overheard line of the trip?

David Paltiel :: Summer 2007 :: Austria, Bavaria, & Liechtenstein: Hallstatt and Salzburg

http://www.davidpaltiel.blogspot.com/2007/06/hallstatt-and-salzburg.html

Friday, June 29, 2007. When I last posted, I was about to head off to Hallstatt. There are only two things to do in Hallstatt: there are some ice caves and there’s a salt mine. The ice caves were packed with crowds, but the salt mine. Because Hallstatt has very little land, for centuries it had to reuse graves. The residents would dig up the bones after bodies had been in the ground for about 10 years, paint them, and put them in an ossuary. Here’s the church and the inside of the ossuary:. The largest i...

David Paltiel :: Summer 2007 :: Austria, Bavaria, & Liechtenstein: Vienna, Part Zwei

http://www.davidpaltiel.blogspot.com/2007/06/vienna-part-zwei.html

Sunday, June 17, 2007. Vienna, Part Zwei. The imperial Schönbrunn Palace. Was Maria Theresa's residence and though it is not as grand or lavish as Versailles or Peterhof, it is very impressive. Everything in the gardens was in full bloom and there's also a labyrinth behind the main building. Wine taverns are clustered on the outskirts of the city and in the suburbs. They make and serve heuriger. I'll be in Vienna until Tuesday and then I'm off to Graz. Posted by David Paltiel. Map of My Route.

David Paltiel :: Summer 2007 :: Austria, Bavaria, & Liechtenstein: Willkommen!

http://www.davidpaltiel.blogspot.com/2007/06/willkommen.html

Sunday, June 10, 2007. This blog is for my adventures in Central Europe, where I'm spending the summer researching and writing for the 2008 edition of Let's Go: Europe. From June 12 until July 28 I will be traipsing through Austria, Bavaria, and Liechtenstein on a whirlwind tour from Vienna to Munich, taking notes on everything from Alpine hiking trails to Viennese opera houses. With countless coffee shops, castles, and beer gardens lining my route, this job is looking sweeter every day. Besides "welcome...

David Paltiel :: Summer 2007 :: Austria, Bavaria, & Liechtenstein: Munich

http://www.davidpaltiel.blogspot.com/2007/07/munich.html

Sunday, July 15, 2007. It’s been a week of constant travel as I made from my way through Bavaria to Munich. I last posted from Innsbruck, my final city in Austria and also one of my favorites. From Innsbruck, I cross the border into Germany to visit Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The nearest town to Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain) and Füssen. Neither were particularly exciting, especially since it was pouring rain the entire time. And return to Liechtenstein when I’m done with Munich. Unfortunately, I do...
