Large Abstracts in Oil. The Wallace Stevens Suite. These paintings look at the Tate St Ives Gallery from both inside and out. The sweeping architecture makes a wonderful contrast with the beach and rolling sea outside, which was of course the intention. This painting was suggested by the stunning coastline near Charldon Herring in Dorset and more specifically by the old inn sign (now removed) at the pub in the village. The sign which was executed in a charming naive cartoon style showed a sailor returning home from sea only to find his wife in the arms if her lover. All produce abstract variations using a variety of techniques from the hard-edged to the atmospheric, often within the same composition. Large Abstracts in Oil. The Wallace Stevens Suite. In the series I have explored the balance and tension between contrast and harmony which all successful compositions possess. The contrasting elements include: line against plane, quiet marks against stronger gestural ones, and juxtapositions of glazed areas against impastoed textures. This subject provides the opportunity of exploring different viewpoints, from the high-aerial vantage point of 'Banff from Sulphur Mountain' to the ground-level viewpoint of 'Banff: Melting Snow'. The resolution of deep, spatial atmosphere and the crystal-clear clarity of a late winter landscape, was a challenge here.
