Expedition to Dongsha Atoll. An unexpected focus of our expedition to Dongsha Atoll has become the coral bleaching event taking place on the reef flat. Some of our observations of the bleaching event are described in detail in blog posts on the home page. Bleaching most likely occurred as a result of 4-5°C warming over just two weeks. This page serves as a gallery of pictures that we have taken on the reef to document bleaching during our expedition. June 24: Multiple genera still bleached in the lagoon.

Expedition to Dongsha Atoll. Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Needle in a haystack. Finding something smaller than a soda can in the ocean is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. But in this case, finding the needle means recovering very valuable information. We found a temperature logger deployed on the forereef! The logger was attached to a buoy to make it easier to find. In this picture, Tom has just recovered the old loggers and. Is about to attach new loggers to the buoy. Photo by Yalan,. Completely c...

Expedition to Dongsha Atoll. Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea. The ocean, between layers of water of different density. While these internal waves occur throughout the ocean, the unique underwater topography of the South China Sea produces massive internal waves. On the ocean surface, 2-meter waves draw a crowd of surfers, but the internal waves in the South China Sea can be a thousand times. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Expedition to Dongsha Atoll. Is a graduate student in the Joint Program in Oceanography. At MIT / Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Anne Cohen's lab. Tom is interested in how coral growth and bioerosion are affected by seawater properties including temperature, nutrients, and pH. In addition, Tom develops geochemical tools to use the chemistry preserved in coral skeletons to better understand how corals have responded to environmental change in the past. Temperature data on coral reefs to investiga...
